  2. Marine Meteorology and Oceanography Programme IMO and IHO Operational Ocean Forecasting System (GDPFS for Ocean) (e.g., Waves, Storm Surges, Sea Ice, SST, ocean circ., etc.) Users Services (e.g., MSI/GMDSS, MPERSS, SAR, DRR, etc.) In situ and spaceObservations ICS Intertanko Intercargo Oil and Gas Industry Fisheries Etc. 3. JCOMM Concept and Objectives NWP, climate studies, maritime services, ocean modeling and forecasting, ocean research, all require integrated metocean data and information streams To address these requirements and realize potential benefits, JCOMM jointly sponsored by WMO and IOC Combines and benefits from the strengths and expertise of the met. and ocean communities, avoids duplication of effort, integrates existing activities User oriented, functions at global, regional and national levels Integrated marine observing, data management and services system; extensive outreach programme An implementation mechanism for global GOOS and in situ marine component of GOS Inter-Regional Workshop on Policy AspectsJoint Egyptian-Dutch Conference

  4. Marine Meteorological and Oceanographic Services JCOMM as the bridge between meteorology and oceanography Operational oceanography now a reality Community welfare, socio-economic impacts, hazard mitigation, climate change, marine environment…. National and international cooperation essential – IOC, WMO, met and ocean agencies ClimateServices WeatherServices Atmosphere Marine WeatherServices Ocean ClimateServices Ocean Oceanographic Services Inter-Regional Workshop on Policy AspectsJoint Egyptian-Dutch Conference

  6. Storm Surge Watch Scheme (SSWS) The WMO Executive Council (June 2008): • Requested the Secretary-General, in consultation with UNESCO/IOC to facilitate development of storm surge watch schemes for regions subject to tropical cyclones; • Urged regional associations concerned to incorporate a storm surge watch scheme in the tropical cyclone advisory arrangements and in the TCP Regional Operating Plans and/or Manuals; • Noting that some RSMCs with Activity Specialization in Tropical Cyclones were not equipped to function as a storm surge forecast producing centres, requested the Secretary-General, based on the technical advice of JCOMM, to examine the capabilities and willingness of such Tropical Cyclone RSMCs and other storm surge forecast producing centres to participate in regional storm surge watch schemes, and to develop proposals for consideration by the concerned regional Tropical Cyclone Programme bodies and regional associations. Inter-Regional Workshop on Policy AspectsJoint Egyptian-Dutch Conference

  7. Coastal Inundation Forecasting Demonstration Project Why a demonstration project ? • Cooperative work as a strategy for building improved operational forecasts and warnings capability for coastal inundation Goals: • Improve and effectively coordinate coastal inundation forecasting and warning services by developing and implementing a coupled coastal forecasting system (integrated approach to storm surge, wave and flood forecasting) • Improve interactions of NMHSs with Disaster Management and Civil Protection Agencies, through the development of preparedness, response and management strategies of storm surges and waves associated with coastal inundation • Introducing new products and training Improve the availability and use of the coastal inundation forecasting products, under different hydrometeorological and risk situations -substantive training is required • Complementing other initiatives (e.g., Flood Mapping, SWFDP, UNESCO and ESA activities on storm surge modelling and monitoring, etc.) Inter-Regional Workshop on Policy AspectsJoint Egyptian-Dutch Conference 7

  8. Coastal Inundation Forecasting Demonstration Project Expected Outcomes and Contribution to the Storm Surge Watch Scheme (SSWS) • To enable NMHSs to provide credible forecasting of coastal inundation events with adequate lead time for warnings; • To improve the skill of forecasting and warning products through feedback from NMHSs and user communities; • To improve interaction of NMHSs with Disaster Management and Civil Protection Agencies before and during events; • To provide tools for undertaking risk assessments for coastal inundation associated with extreme events such as tropical cyclones; • To share best practices on coastal inundation forecasting among NMHSs and users of such information; • Facilitate preparatory steps for the development of a comprehensive SSWS. Inter-Regional Workshop on Policy AspectsJoint Egyptian-Dutch Conference 8
