  1. Next Meeting • 4th ISS Plenary • Irvine Aug21, 22 (NUFACT06 Aug 24 – 30) • Workshops • Physics Group, June, Valencia • Machine Group, July 26 – 28, Princeton P J Dornan - ISS3 - RAL

  2. Thanks • Ajit Kurup, Juergen Pozimski • Debbie Loader • Piera Brambilla • Ken Long P J Dornan - ISS3 - RAL

  3. ISS a one year Study commenced NuFact05 Ends NuFact06 To Discuss Now Focus efforts For the Final Report & Presentation at NuFact06 Plan the Next Step after ISS Concluding Discussion ISS RAL Meeting Apr 2006 P J Dornan - ISS3 - RAL

  4. The ISS End Game • Presentation • At NuFact06 • And then it is important that the results are widely distributed • Report • Before the end of 2006 • Based on the 3 Working Groups • What should this include? P J Dornan - ISS3 - RAL

  5. Physics • The importance of n physics • Justification for precision determination of the oscillation parameters • to the level of the CKM parameters? • Comparisons of Performance • Superbeam, b-Beam, n Factory • With various scenarios with appropriate detectors at suitable baselines P J Dornan - ISS3 - RAL

  6. Physics Report How important – gold, silver, platinum? In the ideal scenario should we measure ne→ ne, nm, nt nm→ ne, nm, nt Specifically - how important are the tau channels? P J Dornan - ISS3 - RAL

  7. Muon Physics & the n Factory Intense muon beams are needed for muon physics Could be the place for the next major advance But - is a n Factory suitable for muon experiments? P J Dornan - ISS3 - RAL

  8. Detectors Which can effectively be magnetised? Iron calorimeter, Emulsion Liquid Argon?? How low can one reduce the threshold? Which can identify taus? This must tie in with the relevance of gold, silver platinum Cost? Define the necessary R&D Programme P J Dornan - ISS3 - RAL

  9. Accelerator This will concentrate on the neutrino factory A viable baseline design with realistic parameters and an indication of increase or decrease in performance as one moves from the baseline Cost & Timescale Cost will not be easy - but even to €0.5B Timescale – Important to show that we could have a precision neutrino facility by tne end of the next decade The R&D Programme - MICE, MERIT, + … P J Dornan - ISS3 - RAL

  10. SuperBeams, Synergies Little discussion on future Superbeams Is it assumed problems are understood? Most synergies centre around the proton driver and it is appreciated that the proton driver used will have more than one application - but the effort has been to understand the needs of the neutrino factory. P J Dornan - ISS3 - RAL

  11. Incremental Path to a NeutrinoFactory Path to a NeutrinoFactory or b-Beam n Factory b Beam But n Factory and b beam can be on same timescale as superbeam upgrades Era of sensitivity & precision P J Dornan - ISS3 - RAL

  12. After ISS • For the precision era • Superbeams, b-beams, n-Factory will compete for resources • Could have 0, 1 or 2 Superbeams • plus a b-beam orn-Factory complex • Decision Point • 2009-2011 • Need a CDR for future neutrino complex by ~2009 • b-Beam and n-Factory • Assume superbeam developments will come from present proponents P J Dornan - ISS3 - RAL

  13. Neutrino Factory • Following ISS there needs to be a Design Study for a Neutrino Factory • It will need engineering effort • And therefore resources • Where can these come from? • Funding Agencies, Labs, EU • At the BENE/ISS meeting tomorrow planning for a request to the EU FP7 programme will start • But funding from this source will not come until mid-end 2007 • Activity must start before then - it should start this year • And maintain the momentum of the ISS study P J Dornan - ISS3 - RAL

  14. Organisation of the n-Fact Design Study • Should be decided by NuFact06 • Do we keep a similar structure to the ISS? • Accelerator • Detector • Physics • How to get organised? • Can we continue to have it truly international? P J Dornan - ISS3 - RAL

  15. Coherence of the Neutrino Community • Highly Desirable • Can a n-Factory IDS be incorporated with the broader neutrino community • Superbeams • b-Beam • b-Beam also requires a major R&D effort • Can these both be conducted under the same umbrella • We have to convince the wider n community that the precision age (b-Beam or n-Factory) • is feasible and possible by ~2020 P J Dornan - ISS3 - RAL
