  2. Properties of Magnets • Magnet: any material that attracts iron or things made of iron • All magnets: • Have two poles (North and South) • Exert forces on each other and are surrounded by a magnetic field

  3. Magnetic Poles • Poles: the parts on a magnet that have opposite magnetic qualities • Have a NORTH and SOUTH • Spinning electric charges create a magnetic force that either attract or repel

  4. Causes of Magnetism • Domains (groups of atoms in tiny areas of the object) line up and make a strong magnetic field. If the domains don’t line up, the object will not be magnetic.

  5. Kinds of Magnets • Ferromagnets: • Made of iron, nickel, cobalt, or mixes of these. • Ex. magnetite • Electromagnets: • Magnet made from an electric current • Usually has an iron core Temporary magnets can be made from soft iron, but they lose theirmagnetism easily.

  6. The “Earth” Magnet • Earth’s core is mostly iron and nickel. This helps create a magnetic field around Earth.
