  1. Problem Solving for Math 5th Grade Ms. Solernou

  2. What is Guess, Check and Revise? Guess and Check" is a problem-solving strategy that students can use to solve mathematical problems by guessing the answer and then checking that the guess fits the conditions of the problem.

  3. Guess, Check, and Revise(steps) • Understand the problem • Make a Plan • Carry out the plan • Check the answer

  4. Problem 1 • The theater club at school put on a play. For one performance, the club sold 133 tickets and raised $471. • Tickets cost $4 for adults and $3 for students. How many student tickets and how many adult tickets did the club sell? • Step 1 (understand the problem): • Ticket cost = adult $4, student $3 • Number of tickets sold: 133 tickets • Money raised=$471

  5. Step 2 (make a plan): • We are going to take a guess, and then test it. If not correct, then we use what we learned to make a better guess. • To find how much money was made on adult tickets, multiply your number by 4.

  6. On your own: • IXL 5th grade: J3

  7. Jenna ordered sandwiches for her friends. The veggie sandwiches cost $2 apiece and the meat sandwiches cost $6 apiece. Jenna ordered 7 sandwiches and paid $34. How many of each type of sandwich did she order?

  8. Conclusion: • There were 72 adult tickets and 61 student tickets sold • Check your answer: does it seem reasonable?
