A person is considered obese when his or her weight is 20 % or more above normal weight. • Obesity affects all ages there is a case of childhood obesity. 13. Our Letter to U.S Senator Tom Carper • U.S Senator Tom Carper • February 9, 2012 • Dear U.S. Senator Tom Carper • I am here to inform you about a serious problem that is going on called obesity. The scope of this problem has been identified as a national issue across the United States. Did you know that 63.1% of adults in the U.S. were either overweight or obese just in the year of 2009? And obesity in children has become a top priority for health professionals in the United States. More than two-thirds of Americans are overweight and 30 per cent suffer from obesity but there has been a dramatic increase in childhood obesity. In the United States, the percentage of overweight or obese children has doubled over the past 30 years to 25 per cent of the under-19 population. Overweight and obesity are caused by an imbalance between food consumption and energy expenditure and experts agree that this is probably due to changes in diets as they are increasingly high in fats and carbohydrates. Also, people are obese because of lack of exercise and too many fast- foods restaurants. Children are increasingly exposed to genetic and environmental "triggers" that can lead to obesity and possibly diabetes. What I want you to do are to encourage people to be fit and eat healthy foods. Also, to insure them to have a doctor’s appointment yearly or as needed. I hope to hear from you very soon . Thank you for your time. • Sincerely , • Kai Anderson And Alexis Bloomfield • Contact us at 3022598510 Kai • 302 -7570247- Alexis
