  1. Multi-cone Calibration Jessica Dunmore and S. Mine (UCI) 15 Dec. 2004

  2. Overview of cone generator project light source (laser or LED?) (side view of tank) • Purpose: ring counting studies • (e/p0 separation, etc.) • Similar sources created before. • Ours consists of: • any number of cone generator units • (each unit generates single cone) • + • a supporting structure to change intensity and direction of each cone supporting structure optical fibers 1st cone 2nd cone unit-1 unit-2 (This example shows two cones with ~135°open angle.)

  3. Motivation • We do not have good control sample data for ring counting studies. • The data would be useful for: • Demonstration of e/p0 separation and estimation of the systematic error of POLfit for ne/nm measurement. • Verifying that POLfit performance at SK and 2km is the same OR characterizing differences between the two. • For this, it is important to have a common calibration source.

  4. 250MeV/c open angle btw. 1st&2nd gammas (deg.) 500MeV/c 750MeV/c 2nd gamma energy (MeV) ( ) E2 E1+E2 Kinematics of BG p0 for ne search 250MeV/c p0 FC 1R-e + POLfit cuts 500MeV/c p0 FC 1R-e fraction of remaining p0 BG 750MeV/c p0 dominant p0 BG: - 2nd gamma energy: <100MeV - open angle: 30~180deg. energy fraction of 2nd gamma

  5. Previous experiments • IMB type (laser+diffuser+cone shape channel) : • H.S.Park, et al. (IMB), 1985 • SK type-I (laser + lens + cone shape mirror) : • Ohta, et al. (SK), 1997 • SK type-II (laser with cone shape reflector(?), ie. “huge laser pointer” ): • Y.Suzuki (SK), 199X NOTE: - 1 & 2: for PDK studies, intensities & directions of each cone were fixed - 3: the generator still exists but not used in tank yet

  6. Conceptual design (side view) supporting wire from calib. hole ex.) IMB type unit optical fiber optical fiber diffuser ball supporting sphere (or arm) to hold unit(s) cone vessel 42O unit-1 cone shape channel unit-2 (Only showing some possible vertical locations of the unit)

  7. Diffuser ball optical fiber connecting rod ball K2K 1kt laser ball • Will first test the existing K2K laser ball. • 50 cm diameter • Acrylic doped with MgO • May also try (SNO-style) glass sphere filled with silicone polymer and glass beads. • Will try to make smaller ball. 2.8 4 20(30) (Shaomin) 50 *Thanks to Shaomin, Rich Helmer, and Miura-san

  8. Cone-emitting vessel • Prototype made to fit K2K diffuser ball. • 13 Dec. 2004 • Will test cone shape in near future. • Need to optimize length and with of the cone-shaped channel.

  9. Pre-tests @ UCI(Mine/Jessica/Jeff) dark box PMT or PD Necessary Measurements • Isotropy of output light from diffuser ball (air) • Light leak from the vessel(air) • Cone angle of output light from vessel+ball (water) PMT R refraction? diffraction? H water (Isotropy measurement) (angle measurement)

  10. Testing Status • Dark room available at UCI • Tank ordered • Will use water-tight 8’’ PMT and cover it with a black sheet • Borrowed dye laser • First prototype of cone vessel completed • K2K diffuser ball to be sent this month Will begin testing of cone vessel in late Dec. or early Jan.

  11. Cone Generator MC • Developing the cone MC based on existing laser beam MC. • Able to generate 42°beam at any vertex, in any direction. • Need to block forward region. 42° laser beam MC 300 MeV electron MC

  12. Status and tentative plan (taking into account possibility of KEK n beam resuming April) • Mine(UCI)/Kaneyuki-san(ICRR) started to work together • wish to take the data at 1kt first • will test all three types of the unit and choose the best one • ICRR will order the SK type-I and repair the SK type-II. • Design of the IMB-type unit and the supporting structure started at UCI • Test stand currently being developed. • Considering new diffuser balls. • Also considering other types of cone generators (see D. Casper’s talk). • Optimize the cone shape channel by making a couple of vessels first and take single cone data at 1kt hopefully in January. • Development of cone MC underway. • Take both single/multi-cone data by the end of March at K2K. • TRIUMF (Rich Helmer) proposed to attach the cone generator on the manipulator and also may join the above plans.
