  2. IEEE Standards Education Committee The IEEE Standards Education Committee (IEEE SEC) is a joint committee of IEEE Educational Activities Board and IEEE Standards Association

  3. The IEEE Organization ~375,000 Members Worldwide

  4. IEEE Standards Education CommitteeMission Mission: • Promote the importance of standards in meeting technical, economic, environmental, and societal challenges. • Secure and disseminate learning materials on the application of standards in the design and development aspects of educational programs. • Secure and provide short courses about standards needed in the design and development phases of professional practice. • Actively promote the integration of standards into academic programs. • Lead other education initiatives planned jointly by EAB and the SA as needed.

  5. IEEE Standards EducationWho Benefits • Experienced technology professionals • Standards developers • Product developers • Standards managers • Marketing professionals • Business leaders • SSO/SDO • Committee leaders • Committee participants • Governance participants • Undergraduate Students • Graduate students • Entry-level technology professionals • Candidates for licensure

  6. IEEE Standards Education on the Web The IEEE Standards Education website serves as the focal point for the delivery of all relevant information on education about standards. http://www.standardseducation.org

  7. IEEE Standards EducationWeb Site • Content for students and educators • To support the incorporation of the teaching of standards in the undergraduate engineering and engineering technology programs • To benefit both students and their faculty mentors as they face challenging design processes • To help electrical and computer engineering undergraduate programs incorporate standards in their learning processes • To provide learning tools to use in learning about standards and their impact on design and development • Increase content useful to the practicing professional • To educate the practicing professional about standards, their applications, and their impact on designing new products, processes and services

  8. Standards Education Web Site Tutorials & Case Illustrations • Tutorials are comprehensive learning modules that provide guidance in how to assemble and apply standards appropriate to the development of a product or process • The Role of Standards in Engineering and Technology • The Role of Standards in Cellular Telephony • Power Engineering • System Verilog (coming soon – will be demoed this week) • Case Illustrations are examples of the application of standards in a real-world context • Wireless Routers • Multimode Mobile Phones

  9. IEEE Standards Education http://www.ieee.org/web/education/standards/tutorials.html

  10. IEEE Standards Education Web SiteStudent Application Papers • Illustrate how specific standards were applied to a task in the classroom, with students and/or faculty describing the way in which standards impacted the design process • Submitted by students and/or their faculty mentors • Now Available: “Applications of IEEE 802.11b Wireless Standards in the Realization of a New Service Paradigm for New Jersey’s Garden State Parkway”

  11. IEEE Standards Education Web SiteThe Remaining Sections • Glossary of key standards terms • Reference Guide • Alphabetical listing of standards development bodies and standards-related terminologies – soon to be categorized by technical domain • News and Features • Gateway to other learning opportunities

  12. IEEE Standards EducationWorkshops • IEEE SEC is currently working on a proposal to run a full day IEEE 802 workshop at GLOBECOM 2009 • Cover each of the working groups • Standards development process • Intellectual property issues • Separate registration for main conference • Proposal to repeat in IEEE R8 • Repeat above in some form at MELECON 2010 • Need to engage with organising committee

  13. IEEE Standards EducationHow you can help… • Student Application Papers are needed! • $500 mini-grants for students • Additional mini-grants for Faculty members • Topics for relevant Tutorials and Case Studies for students and educators • Agenda slots for standards and standards education topics in your local student and GOLD activities • Consider active participation in the IEEE Standards Education Committee activities
