English 102 This slide show contrasts thesis statements (The tone is opinionated, interpretive, judgmental) with controlling ideas(The tone is reportorial, neutral, unbiased) Please note: the “unacceptable” designation for each of the controlling ideas that follow does not take away from its actually being quite acceptable for the four page report. I’m simply trying to differentiate between the two so that you bring a thesis to the conferences, not an objective statement.
Acceptable for the Argument Essay (six page) Thesis: (opinionated, biased, editorialized, subjective, interpretive) Recent gun-related legislation passed by states like Mississippi, Tennessee, Texas, and Wyoming--this one before the President’s press conference!—is against the grain of where we should be going as a country to inhibit gun violence; our goal should be amicability: we need to reach a reasonable consensus on issues like what military–style weapons to ban, what should be the extent of background checks, and what steps we can take to keep weapons from falling into the hands of mentally deranged people like, most recently, James Holmes and Adam Lanza. Unacceptable (neutral, unbiased, reportorial, objective, disinterested) Current controversy surrounding gun-related legislation centers on several states’ moves to counter the proposals set forth in the recent press conference by President Obama; states like Mississippi, Tennessee, Texas, and Wyoming are proceeding or have unilaterally implemented stringent laws. However, proponents of the broader based federal proposals to inhibit gun violence call for more synthesis among all the states to ban military-style weapons and to agree on background checks and mental health programs. But, acceptable for the four page essay
Acceptable for the Argument Essay (six page) Thesis: (opinionated, biased, editorialized, subjective, interpretive) With many CEOs and big business owners succumbing to their own greed in past decades and not heeding numerous reports on trade with China, the U.S. must now effect more stringent restrictions or require equitable export demands in order to greatly decrease the economic stranglehold China has on America andthe political influence it has on other countries. Unacceptable (neutral, unbiased, reportorial, objective, disinterested) The current controversy surrounding China’s economic ties to the United States has proponents and adversaries battling over how to mitigate its stranglehold: they focus on more stringent restrictions and equitable export demands. Acceptable for the Argument Essay Thesis: (opinionated, biased, editorialized, subjective, interpretive) Due to the problems in the status quo of health care provided to American citizens, the federal government should establish a free universal health care system (or single payer system), which would provide two extremely valuable benefits: coverage for uninsured people and an improvement in overall health care quality and service. Unacceptable: (neutral, unbiased, reportorial, objective, disinterested) Most Americans would agree that the current status of the health care system is in need of reform: one of the proposals for fixing the problems is a universal health care plan (or single payer system); the debate concerning its efficaciousness often centers on the coverage for uninsured people and overall improvement of health care quality and service. Acceptable for the Argument Essay Thesis: (opinionated, biased, editorialized, subjective, interpretive) Despite the fact that arts funding requires taxpayers’ dollars and includes the possibility that obscene art may be demonstrated in the classroom, arts funding in public schools can enhance individual student development, and help build stronger communities by reducing crime rates and broadening people’s cultural awareness. Unacceptable (neutral, unbiased, reportorial, objective, disinterested) Controversy always arises when the subject of funding for public school arts comes to the forefront: the debate is a heated one mainly because taxpayer dollars are involved; adversary and advocate positions differ on what constitutes “obscene,” enhancing student development, building stronger communities through reduced crime, and augmenting cultural awareness. Acceptable for the Argument Essay Thesis: (opinionated, biased, editorialized, subjective, interpretive) Although there have been significant improvements and documented successes within the Arizona child welfare system in recent years and despite the well intentioned efforts of “family preservation” programs, the incidents of child abuse continue to be unacceptably high and must be refocused in the interest of protecting the child, before preserving the family. Unacceptable (neutral, unbiased, reportorial, objective, disinterested) Although both proponents and opponents agree that Arizona’s child welfare system has improved considerably, one major cause for debate centers on the family preservation programs and whether they are detracting from efforts to reduce a high rate of child abuse. Acceptable for the Argument Essay Thesis: (opinionated, biased, editorialized, subjective, interpretive) As part of the 700 billion dollar bailout, which no doubt Congress will approve this month, legislators should appropriate a substantial sum to help struggling American families with mortgage problems, extend unemployment benefits, strengthen the food stamp program, and give aid to municipalities so that they can provide health care and other services. Unacceptable (neutral, unbiased, reportorial, objective, disinterested) Although the U.S. Congress will approve the 700 billion called for by the Bush administration to save our financial system, much debate will ensue concerning how much money should be allotted to struggling families, entitlement programs, and states and cities with health care and service crises. Acceptable for the Argument Essay Thesis: (opinionated, biased, editorialized, subjective, interpretive) Although wolf hunting season has begun in Idaho and will begin soon in Montana, these states’ plans are premature and misguided. Environmental groups must continue with their call for an injunction to halt the hunts because the states’plans are inadequate and because the population number--around 1600--is not high enough to effect sustainability. Unacceptable (neutral, unbiased, reportorial, objective, disinterested) The first legal wolf hunt in decades began in Idaho in late August and will begin in Montana in September, but it has hunters and environmental groups in a heated debate about the inadequacy of the states’approaches and the justification of a 1600 population being enough to sustain the gray wolf species. Acceptable for the Argument Essay Thesis: (opinionated, biased, editorialized, subjective, interpretive) In his State of the Union speech, President Obama was right in calling for more unanimity and less obstructionism because if Congress does not effect more consensus, our economy may stagnate, and we may never gain enough momentum to solve the problems with energy independence, infrastructure, education, and job creation. Unacceptable (neutral, unbiased, reportorial, objective, disinterested) Whether the President’s State of the Union speech will help end the gridlock that has besieged Congress since his tenure began is one debatable issue but also controversial is the approach to handling some of the pressing problems this country faces: energy independence, infrastructure, education, and job creation. Acceptable for the Argument Essay Thesis: (opinionated, biased, editorialized, subjective, interpretive) Now that the protestors in Egypt havenon-violently and successfully caused a regime change, the temporary” government” must dissolve the remaining Parliament and implement policies that will assure the Egyptian people a path to free elections and a secular democracy, not one that could be run by a stricter Islamist group with theocratic intentions. Unacceptable (neutral, unbiased, reportorial, objective, disinterested) The eighteen-day revolution behind them,the Egyptian people will now consider thetemporary government’s role in the aftermath of regime change: debated will be the current Parliament’s effectiveness in the transformation, what type of elections will ensue, and whether a new democratic Egypt will be secular or involve religious doctrine. Acceptable for the Argument Essay Thesis: (opinionated, biased, editorialized, subjective, interpretive) Because prescription drug use is on the rise for many of our young men and women soldiers who come back from either Iraq or Afghanistan with depression, PTSD, anxiety, and other severe maladies, the Pentagon must implement a better monitoring system to keep them from overmedicating and must allocate more money for alternative treatments to end this pharmacological abuse. Unacceptable (neutral, unbiased, reportorial, objective, disinterested) Many of the Armed forces’ medical clinicians admit there is a prescription drug abuse problem with our young men and women returning from either Iraq or Afghanistan with severe psychological maladies; however, a debate exists between those who feel the drugs are helping the majority of these soldiers and those who want more stringent monitoring and alternative treatments. Acceptable for the Argument Essay Thesis: (opinionated, biased, editorialized, subjective, interpretive) Congress should rethink its decision tofreeze or cut funding to the S.E.C.’s budgetbecause the job of policing the ever more electronic securities market is growing extremely more complex; instead of cutting the Commission’s funding, Congress should increase it, especially as it relates to digital data management systems. Unacceptable (neutral, unbiased, reportorial, objective, disinterested) One controversial issue brought up by Congress’ decision to freeze or cutdiscretionary spending to help reduce the deficit is the amount it will deny the S.E.C. to upgrade its digital management systems to help in policing the ever more complex electronic securities markets. Acceptable for the Argument Essay Thesis: (opinionated, biased, editorialized, subjective, interpretive) Although the Evangelical organizations and other Christian movements will eventually bring the issue to the Supreme Court, the recent overturning of Proposition Eight by a San Francisco federal Appeals Court upholds the unconstitutionality of such anti-equal protection laws and strikes another firm blow to the “undermining of traditional marriage” argument, which may pave the way to more states’ allowing gays to marry. Unacceptable (neutral, unbiased, reportorial, objective, disinterested) Now that a San Francisco Federal Appeals Court has overturned the extremely contentious Proposition Eight, passed in 2008, its proponents, mainly conservative Christians, and adversaries will battle over its effects on traditional marriage, its constitutionality as regards equality for all under the law, and its allowing more states to consider gay marriage legislation; the tempestuous debate will eventually be heard by the Supreme Court. Acceptable for the Argument Essay Thesis: (opinionated, biased, editorialized, subjective, interpretive) The current arguments for maintaining a nuclear arsenal are specious at best, and many are based on myths the proponents want us to believe; thus, it is imperative that the United states lead the way in abolishing these obsolete weapons--the last one was used sixty-seven years ago--and retract the one hundred eighty-five billion dollars that have been needlessly set aside for maintenance: further, we must try to convince the other eight countries that have them to abandon their weapons of mass destruction. Unacceptable (neutral, unbiased, reportorial, objective, disinterested) Still a contentious issue, abolishing nuclear weapons has recently come back in the media with adversaries and proponents offering, respectively, impassioned pleas for keeping them as a deterrent against other countries’possible barbaric intentions or retracting the enormous amount of money we spend to upgrade and maintain them; also debated is the issue of whether our country should effectuate a major plan of elimination for all other countries that hold them. Pure objectivity is built into interrogative statements; consequently, a thesis cannot be structured as a question or questions. It must be a declarative sentence or sentences. Unacceptable for the six page essay (neutral, unbiased, reportorial, objective, disinterested) The current transition period in Afghanistan due to the controversy over the latest election results raises several contentious issues: Should President Obama send over more troops while votes are still being counted? Should he utilize more time trying to rid the country of narco-trafficers? And should he put more emphasis on cleaning up the venality that is part of the current administration?
