  4. 2. Spread • discuss how spread out the data is • refers to the variability of the data • Range, standard deviation, IQR

  5. 3. Type of distribution • refers to the overall shape of the distribution • symmetrical, uniform, skewed, or bimodal

  6. 4. Unusual occurrences • outlier - value that lies away from the rest of the data • gaps • clusters • anything else unusual

  10. Displaying Bivariate Numerical Data A response variable measures an outcome of a study. An explanatory variable attempts to explain the observed outcomes. • The explanatory variable is always plotted on the horizontal axis of a scatterplot.

Displaying Bivariate Numerical Data Two variables are positively associated when above-average values of one tend to accompany above-average values of the other, and below-average values tend similarly to occur together. Two variables are negatively associated when above-average values of one accompany below-average values of the other, and vice versa.

Displaying Bivariate Numerical Data To construct the median trace of a scatterplot, • first slice the plot into vertical strips of equal width; • compute the median of the y-axis in each strip and plot this median vertically above the horizontal midpoint of the strip; and • connect the medians by straight line segments to form the median trace.
