MUD USE IN SPAS • Mud application has proven benefits. • rheumatic conditions, muscle aches, etc. • Pre-historic use of mud to wounds, bites • Spas have specially designed warmers, blankets, immersions, and packs. • Muds sourced from specific locations • high concentrations of beneficial compounds

  15. PELOIDS • All muds used in spas are peloids • clay, peat, moor, & coastal slime • Peloids’ specific heat lower than water • Thermal indifference = point at which body feels neither heat nor cold • 93°F for water, 100°F for peloids

  16. PELOIDS (CONT.) • Mud layer closest to client in bath creates a barrier to heat. • hotter muds can be used • mud will not feel too hot • high temperatures for mud are 110°F–120°F • Peloids’ most important therapeutic property: • ability to transmit heat

  17. LOCAL EFFECTSOF PELOID THERAPY • Stimulates blood circulation • Relaxes muscles • Slackens connective tissues • Eases minor pains

  18. SYSTEMIC EFFECTSOF PELOID THERAPY • Increased body temperature • Profuse perspiration • Increased heart rate • Blood pressure lower • Peripheral vessels dilated • Hyperemia & increased local metabolism • Chronic inflammatory processes speeded • Healing reflex reaction in inner organs aided

  19. HUMIC ACID • Main active substance in mud • Helps purify the body through chelation • Helps draw impurities through the skin, especially moor muds

  20. CLAYS • A special type of peloid • Highly absorbent • From many sources around the world • Wide variety of forms, colors, & textures • Applications can be rustic like Glen Ivy • clients wallow in outdoor clay pits • Or highly stylized, like Rasul chambers

  21. FANGO • Italian word for “mud” • From volcanic rock called phonolite • Found beneath clay called loess • Ground to powder & called volcanic fango • Main mineral component is zeolite • Used therapeutically for centuries • Plinius (23–79 AD) mentioned Fango mud from the thermal ponds of Battaglia

  22. PARAFANGO • Combination of fango & paraffin wax • Talcum, magnesium oxide add consistency • Developed by professor in Germany • Introduced as spa treatment in the 1950s • Referred to as “Parafango Battaglia” • Melted at 140°F to paste & applied to body • Therapeutic benefit thermal, not chemical

  23. PELIOTHERAPY CONTRAINDICATIONS • Chemical constituents of muds pose no contraindications. • When heated, certain precautions are advised. • Certain clays and muds draw and dry. • caution with sensitive, delicate, or dry skin • Must be from pure, uncontaminated source

  24. PELIOTHERAPY CONTRAINDICATIONS (CONT.) • For hot peloids applied directly to the skin: • acute inflammation • local eczema; avoid specific areas • bleeding or open wounds • heart disease • severe hypertension • diabetic peripheral neuropathy • pregnancy
