  2. Writing Conventions • 15 Question Points • GRAMMAR RULES (Verbs, Pronouns, Adjectives, Parallelism, Contractions) = 5+ Questions • STRUCTURE RULES (Punctuation, Commas, Colons, Semi-colons, Quotations, etc) = 5+ Questions • DICTION, MODIFIERS, PASSIVE VOICE • (LESS THAN 5 QUESTIONS)

  3. Writing Conventions YOU KNOW WHAT TO DO ON 12 + POINTS Remember: Total Points on the ELA CAHSEE = 90 NUMBER OF POINTS YOU NEED TO PASS = 59

SHORT ANSWER QUESTIONS Two types of Questions • SENTENCE REVISION – UNDERLINED PARTS – A part of the sentence is underlined -- what’s the best way to say it? • FILL IN THE BLANK – A part of the sentence is missing – you need to fill in the blank – what’s the best way to say it? Which is correct? • TIPS: What kind of question is it? • Look at the answers!!! • Read only the question • Trust your ears! Read it out loud to yourself. • If it sounds wrong, it probably is wrong.

Writing Conventions: Underlined Parts of Sentences • Verbs, Punctuation, Quotations, Parallelism, Modifiers • Part of the sentence is underlined and you are asked to replace it/leave it as it is A dog bit Tom’s ankle while riding on a bicycle. • Riding a bicycle, a dog bit Tom’s ankle. • While riding a bicycle, a dog bit Tom’s ankle. • While Tom was riding a bicycle, a dog bit his ankle. • Leave as is.

  7. To Pass You Need 66% Out of every three questions you only need to get two right

  8. Tactics • Each multiple choice question has 4 choices. • Eliminate 2 = a 50% chance of getting it right • [1 out of 3 right] + [ a 50/50 guess at the other 2] = [ 2 out of 3] = PASS

  9. Remember • Take your TIME… Ask for The Extra Time! (Even if you think you don’t need it!) • Stay Calm … Stay Focused! • Answer Every Multiple Choice Question – • If you’re not sure about the Question/Answers first decide what the question is asking you about • Read it out loud and eliminate answers that sound wrong. • If it sounds wrong, it probably IS WRONG.

Writing Conventions: PARALLELISMSENTENCE REVISION QUESTION (Pg. 147) • Question asks you to revise an underlined part of a sentence from the passage based on rules of grammar or structure (Which phrse would BEST REPLACE THE UNDERLINED PHRASE? • PARALLELISM = Rule says that words in a sentence that go together must be in the same form. • TIP: Read the sentence – use the surrounding words to help you answer the question! (Look for verbs in the wrong tense – and listen to the answer as you “read” it!)

  17. STRATEGY TO PASS Multiple Choice Questions: Eliminate the Wrong Answers & Make an Educated Guess! • Answer EVERY Question • Eliminate at least 2 wrong answers - You do not lose points for guessing • TRUST YOUR EARS! If it doesn’t sound right – it probably isn’t! Eliminate it!
