  7. Writing Strategies: Sentence Revision Questions • Question asks you to revise a sentence from the passage • QUESTION: What is the BEST way to state the action in Sentence 2? • TIP: Only read that sentence!!! • These questions deal with revising a part of the passage based on GRAMMAR & STRUCTURE rules

  8. Writing Strategies: Sentence Revision Example What is the BEST way to state the action in sentence 2? • Only the gentle chirps of crickets and the rhythm of the cicadas broke the silence of the night. • Breaking the silence of the night was only the gentle chirps of crickets and the rhythm of the cicadas. • Broken only by the gentle chirps of cricks and the rhythm of the cicadas was the silence of the night. • The silence broken in the night was by only the gentle chirps of crickets and the rhythm of the cicadas.

  9. Writing Strategies: Sentence Revision – Passive VOICE • Uses verbs with “to be” forms (like “is” or “was”) to make it sound like the thing doing the action is having the action done to it • WRONG WAY (PASSIVE): The fool was pitied by me • RIGHT WAY (ACTIVE VOICE): I pity the fool. • TIP: Look for the answers that express actions with “to be” verbs – and eliminate them (sometimes the shortest) • TIP: If three (3) answers are the same, it’s unlikely they are correct.

  10. Writing Strategies: Reading Passage Questions • Question asks you to figure out what a specific part of the passage says. • QUESTION: Which sentence is NOT related to the main idea of paragraph 2? • TIP: Read the passage – get a sense of what it is about • Look at the answers – is any one of the sentences weird or really different? Do any of the choices clearly not go with the main idea of the passage? • If you’re unsure, find 2 answer choices that definitely go together – then look at the other two sentences. Which one of those is more like the first two sentences? • What is the MAIN IDEA? (What is the title? What is the 1st sentence in each paragraph about?)
