Act IV. scene i • Setting: Friar Lawrence’s cell • Tuesday • Conflict: Paris’ desire for Juliet influences Capulet’s actions to improve Juliet’s mood • Characters: • Friar Lawrence • knows Juliet is already married • tries to step lightly around marrying her again • provides Juliet with a plan • Paris • wants to solidify plans to marry Juliet on Thursday • argues that the marriage will make Juliet happy, keep her from mourning Tybalt • Juliet • shocked to find Paris with Friar Lawrence • tries to keep Paris content by playing with words: “What must be shall be.” • Comes to get advice from Friar Lawrence • Believes death would be better than living without Romeo

  3. Plan • Juliet agrees to marry Paris • Juliet will take the potion + sleep alone • She will appear dead for 42 hours • Her family will put her in a vault • He’ll send letters with the plan to Romeo • Romeo will return from Mantua to get her

  4. Act IV scene ii • Setting: Capulet’s House • Characters: • Capulet • is pleased by Juliet’s change • wants to speed up the wedding for Wednesday • credits the Friar with her change for heart: “Now, afore God, this reverend holy friar,/ All our whole city is much bound to him.” • Lady Capulet • thinks Thursday will be soon enough • Juliet • returns from the Friar’s looking better • begs her father for his forgiveness

Act IV scene iii • Setting: Capulet’s House • Characters: • Juliet • asks the Nurse and her mother to leave her to her marriage preparations • talks us through her decision • worries what will happen if the potion doesn’t work: • she’ll have to marry Paris • the Friar will poison her • she will suffocate before Romeo comes

  6. Act IV scene iv • Setting: Capulet’s House • Early Wednesday morning • Preparations for the wedding celebration begin • Lord Capulet is jubilant • Paris arrives early for his wedding day

  7. Act IV scene VO Lamentable Day! • Setting: Capulet’s House • Characters: • Nurse • -finds Juliet dead • Paris • heartbroken • he waited so long for this day to come • Friar Lawrence • tries to comfort them in their loss (of course, he knows the truth) • Lord Capulet • changes wedding plans to funeral plans
