  3. Problem Statement • We recognize the technology push to develop applications for a low voltage DC power distribution system.

  4. Information Gathering • DC electricity has a few important advantages over conventional AC electricity: • Higher power transfer capability • Less voltage drop along the line • Lower line resistance

  5. Specifications • Safe and be up to code with any standards involving the commercial workplace. • 100W, 24V, DC source. • Commercially valuable as apposed to residentially.

  6. Identifying Customer Needs • Commercial Building Spaces need efficient lighting designs that minimize excess energy usage. • Office Spaces

  7. Design Objectives • Must be an efficient lighting system that minimizes excess energy usage. • Efficiency is most important, followed by ease of use, aesthetics, cost, and maintenance.

  8. Concept Generation • Adjustable Intensity Lights: • Dimmed to desired intensity for individual cubicles. • Can be directly pointed to the desired area. • Wireless control system. • Infrared Sensor: • Automatically turns lights off if there is no motion in the lighted area for two minutes.

  9. Concept Generation • Adjustable Hydraulic Ceiling: • Lowers so lights can be closer to workspace. • Raises to increase the volume of the room as needed.

  10. Concept Generation • Parallel Rails: • Set of two interconnected parallel rails. • Objects can be moved without being unplugged. • Outlets from Ceiling: • Devices can be plugged into the ceiling.

  11. Concept Selection and Testing • Adjustable intensity LED lights and passive infrared sensors will be combined. • Surveyed consumers were satisfied with this design solution.

  12. Final Design and Documentation • Elation 5watt LED Lamp –runs on DC, comparable to 50w Halogen • Aurora Ademco –Passive Infrared Motion Detector, Wireless

  13. Summary and Conclusions • Our final design is to incorporate an LED lighting system which can be dimmed to the desired intensity and shuts off automatically if there is no motion in the lighted area for two minutes. The entire system utilizes wireless controls.
