  1. Welcome! Look at our BW for TUESday: • [3 min] Identify the parts of the quote sandwich from a student’s model, is there an introduction to quote, quote, and explanation? • Based on Scout’s conversations with Jem, the reader can infer that Jem does not think highly of girls. To prove this, in chapter 4, “I swear Scout, sometimes you act so much like a girl it’s mortifyin’” (Lee 38). This shows that Jem has a very negative view of girls and that he does not want his sister to act like one.

  2. Ssr agenda • [10 min] Sustained Silent Reading: Can a book answer a question you didn’t know you had? • Review norms—expectations that you are reading 2 hours a week at home, response in writer’s note book that should be kept in this room, recording pages read/setting goals, and conferring with teacher about your reading life. • You may read your choice OR To Kill a Mockingbird. • LOG #7: In your note book, finish this sentence: After reading ____pages, I’m not sure____. • [2 min] Book Talk • Record book on our “Book Talk” list and remember the book goes on the shelf tomorrow

  3. Constructed response • [8 min] Paper Pass • Trade your paper with someone at your table. • Check that they have followed the structure correctly. There should be an inference, a quote to prove the point, and an explanation of the quote. • Sign your name if the person has met all requirements. • Return to owner. Double check response and turn in the blue box.

  4. Theme = the underlying meaning • Loss of Innocence/Coming of Age • The character grows up and loses his or her childlike ways of seeing things. This may mean taking on new responsibilities or realizing that something isn’t as important as it once was. It often involves entering a new phase of understanding and learning new skills. • It often involves a new understanding of the nature of humanity and its potential for good or evil. The loss of innocence theme has a more negative view of this transformation while a coming of age story focuses more on the positive aspects –what is gained. • Is To Kill a Mockingbird following the loss of innocence or coming of age theme? • http://www.lcps.org/cms/lib4/VA01000195/Centricity/Domain/10716/Coming%20of%20Age_Loss%20of%20Innocence.pdf

  5. Identifying theme and analyzing clues • Chapter 9 Summary and Analysis • [8 min] Annotate (T2T) on the handout, remember norms • [2 min] Turn and talk to group members about what you read compared to the theme you identified. • Constructed Response • How does this scene highlight how Scout has changed? • [10 min] Record your response properly on the handout using evidence to support your response.

  6. Team time… • [10 min] Group Representative • Turn and talk to your group about your response • Make any corrections/improvements you think you need • Choose one group member to present their response on the ELMO
