  1. FORAGING What is foraging?  Bluegill fish forage for Daphnia.  Find one other example, and explain how this type of behaviour optimizes food intake.

  2. FORAGING: is the act of searching for, chasing, capturing, killing and consuming food. Benefits (energy gained from consumption) should outweigh costs (time and energy needed to get food) Foraging species evolve over time until they possess optimal foraging strategies – when foraging behavior has the maximum benefit at the lowest cost (optimum food intake).

  3. BLUEGILL SUNFISH & DAPHNIA When food is ABUNDANT: will selectively choose LARGER Daphnia >> REDUCES energy spent >> optimal foraging. When food is SCARCE: will not be as selective >> the most important thing is to consume enough energy overall.

  4. ACANTHASTER PLANCI They display optimal foraging by maximizing PATCH RESIDENCE TIME. (remaining in an area as long as there is food, coral polyps, in the coral reef) Once there are no longer any polyps in the area, (when the benefit:cost ratio is reduced), A. Planci will move on.
