  3. Do Now Observe various scuba gear: • Describe what you think each piece of equipment is used for. • Describe vision underwater, with and without a mask.

  4. AIM What is known about the history of inner space exploration? 4500 years ago the ancient Greeks using newly developed glass, made facemasks and used them to dive for ornamental shells.

  5. Question? How difficult is it to see underwater without a facemask? • Try to see if you can tell how much change is at the bottom of the tank without a face mask. • Put on a face mask and try again, is it easier? Why?

  6. How has Diving Technology evolved over the years? • The diving chamber was invented, it was a huge barrel that contained a limited supply of air! • The Diving Suit (1873)was made of watertight canvas and had a heavy metal helmet. Air was pumped from the surface through a tube into the helmet. • SCUBA- self contained underwater breathing apparatus was developed by Jacques Cousteau and his partner EmilGagnan in 1942. It allowed for greater movement and freedom underwater.

  10. Summary Advances in technology, especially in the past 150 years, have given people the ability to explore the ocean: • at greater depths • for longer periods of time • with more safety and mobility

  11. HW • Read pages 15 (bottom)- 20. • Answer section review questions 1-3 on page 20.
