  1. A RESURRECTION PASSION Luke 23:1-16 Matthew 28:1-9

  2. Pilate Hands Jesus over To Roman Soldiers

  3. “If Christ be not risen, Then our preaching is vain” I Corinthians 15:14

  4. I. PONTIUS PILATE HAD A PASSION FOR THE STATUS-QUO RESULTING IN SELF- CONFIDENCE

  5. A. PILATE SAW JESUS AS INNOCENT, BUT TRIED TO PASS THE BUCK In order to clear himself of having to make any decision he sent Jesus to Herod. Pilate tried to appeal to the sympathy of the mob. Pilate reverted back to a custom of releasing a prisoner at Passover time, so he picked Barabbas, a murderer, thinking they would pick Jesus over him. Pilate saw Jesus as being innocent and would not stand up for what he believed in.

  6. B. PILATE WOULD NOT TAKE A STAND FOR JESUS WHY IS IT HARD FOR PEOPLE TO TAKE A STAND FOR GOD? • Academic or scientific reasons • Put off feeling they have plenty of time • Religion is something we can reserve for later in life • Do not want to give up the pleasures of the world • Jesus was just a great teacher

  7. PILATE WOULD NOT TAKE A STAND FOR JESUS WHY IS IT HARD FOR PEOPLE TO TAKE A STAND FOR GOD? • Accept Jesus on the cafeteria plan • Self-confident • Don’t want someone else telling them what to do • They are passionate about what they look like to other people, or how they can get ahead in life by compromising their convictions so they can be accepted

  8. WE HAVE A CHOICE TO MAKE The ability to make intelligent and correct decisions is one of the greatest secrets of being a successful Christian. God creating us in His own image was primary among the characteristics with which He endowed us the ability to understand, to reason, and to choose.

  9. II. JESUS CHRIST HAS A PASSION FOR HIS CHURCH RESULTING IN SPIRITUAL CHARACTER

  10. A. JESUS SHOWED HIMSELF A LIVE TO HIS FOLLOWERS LIST OF EYEWITNESSES OF THE RESURRECTION • Mary Magdalene in the Garden • The women returning from the tomb • Peter later in the day • Two disciples on the road to Emmaus • The remaining disciples when Thomas was absent

  11. JESUS SHOWED HIMSELF A LIVE TO HIS FOLLOWERS LIST OF EYEWITNESSES OF THE RESURRECTION • Later appeared to disciples when Thomas was present • Fishing followers on the Sea of Galilee (Jesus prepared breakfast for them) • 500 believers on a mountain in northern Galilee • At the Ascension over the Mt. of Olives • Outside Damascus He appeared to Paul, Stephen, again to Paul in the temple, and John on the Island of Patmos

  12. IF THE UNBELIEVERS COULD HAVE PRODUCED JESUS DEAD BODY… • The Christian church would have been snuffed out and Hell could have declared a holiday. • The battle would have been over before it begun.

  13. Jesus is still appearing in His glorified body and spirit We meet Jesus when we pray and read His Word

  14. The passion Jesus has for His church began before the early church began in the book of Acts.It began at creation, continued through His incarnation, and was settled at His resurrection. CHRIST’S PASSION

  15. IT WAS THE RESURRECTION THAT BROUGHT UNDERSTANDING OF WHO JESUS WAS. Jesus had to show Himself to His followers to prove that… • all He had taught was true. • they would learn from their mistakes. • learning from our mistakes is what builds spiritual character.

  16. B. JESUS HAD FELLOWSHIP WITH HIS DISCIPLES FOLLOWING THE RESURRECTION After the resurrection the fellowship with Jesus would be complete, and mutually fulfilling. It is not a restrictive burden to be a Christian. It is a happy privilege we share. The passion of Jesus Christ for His church has given us the opportunity to fellowship so we can build Christian character.

  17. IF JESUS WAS NOT SEEN FOLLOWING THE RESURRECTIONHis teachings and fellowship together would have been null and void. The power of the Gospel would have been gone. There would be no need for a passion toward God or this kingdom life IMAGINE

  18. C. JESUS FORGED HIS DISCIPLES INTO THE SPIRITUAL TO FORM THE EARLY CHURCH After the resurrection the disciples were the church. The church is Christ’s body. His resurrection being God’s working out His divine plan through yielded vessels. Because Christ lives I live. We become new creatures and find out what divine living really means. The church remains strong because of the forming character Jesus Christ forges into our lives.

  19. IMAGINE HOW ABUNDANT LIFE IS AFTER THE RESURRECTION “Tell you the truth, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be condemned; he has crossed over from death to life.” John 5:24 “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.” I John 1:9

  20. IMAGINE HOW ABUNDANT LIFE IS AFTER THE RESURRECTION “In the time of my favor I heard you, and in the day of salvation I helped you. I tell you, is the time of God’s favor, now is the day of salvation.” II Corinthians 6:2 We have the power and authority to stand in the name of Jesus Christ because of His resurrection. Acts 4:17-20

  21. THINGS WE KNOW ABOUT JOHNThe youngest apostleHis brother was the apostle James who was beheaded in Acts 12Only apostle to be martyredPart of the inner circleWith Jesus for 3 years JOHN THE APOSTLE

  22. THINGS WE KNOW ABOUT JOHNHe had seen the miracles and heard the teachings of JesusHe and James given the nickname ‘sons if thunder’ because of their zeal and passionAsked Jesus to call down fire from heaven to consume an inhospitable Samaritan village JOHN THE APOSTLE

  23. THINGS WE KNOW ABOUT JOHNRebuked an exorcist for casting out demons because he was not an apostleAsked to sit at the right hand of Jesus in heavenHe went from wanting to sit at the seat of honor in the kingdom, to recording a gospel where he doesn’t even mention himself by name. JOHN THE APOSTLE
