  1. Lesson 17 – UNDERSTANDING OTHER NETWARE SERVICES

  2. OVERVIEW • Network Directory Services (NDS) • Novell BorderManager • Improving server reliability • Domain Name System (DNS) and Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP)

  3. NETWORK DIRECTORY SERVICES (NDS) • Manages large numbers of Novell servers from a single point. • Allows features such as single login for an entire Network’s servers.

  4. Network Directory Services (NDS) Within an NDS tree, the administrator could manage: • Accounts on the Network. • Servers and their resources on the Network. • User account privileges for any server’s resources.

  5. Network Directory Services (NDS)

  6. Network Directory Services (NDS) Provides support for: • Windows NT/2000 servers • Sun Solaris UNIX servers

  7. NOVELL BORDERMANAGER Objectives: • Firewall services for the LAN. • Virtual Private Network (VPN) connections. • Proxy caching. • Logs, alerts, and reports on Internet traffic.

  8. Novell BorderManager Individual BorderManager products: • Firewall services • VPN services • Authentication services.

  9. IMPROVING SERVER RELIABILITY • Novell Standby Server (NSS) • Novell Cluster Services (NCS)

  10. Novell Standby Server (NSS) • Provides automatic fail-over support for NetWare 5. • A running standby server can immediately take over for a failed server.

  11. Novell Cluster Services (NCS) • It is closer to clustering systems, where two similar (but not necessarily identical) servers share a single set of disks.

  12. DNS AND DHCP • Resolves domain names into their associated TCP/IP addresses. • Enables the administrator to establish dynamic host addressing to support TCP/IP. • Manages DNS and DHCP services using the DNS/DHCP Management Console.

  13. SUMMARY Network Directory Services (NDS): • Manages large numbers of Novell servers from a single point. • Allows features such as single login for an entire Network’s servers.

  14. Summary Novell BorderManager: • Manages firewall services and software for the LAN, and remote access software.

  15. Summary Improving Server Reliability: • Novell Standby Server (NSS) • Novell Cluster Services (NCS) • Domain Name System (DNS) • Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP)
