  1. An Alternative Energy Resource For N.I Oran Barr, Liam Devine and Diarmuid Molloy 9E

  2. Alternative Energy Resource • Our alternative energy resource is Hydroelectric Power.

  3. How It Works? • A dam is built to trap water, usually in a valley where there is an existing lake. • Water is allowed to flow through tunnels in the dam, to turn turbines and thus drive generators. • Notice that the dam is much thicker at the bottom than at the top, because the pressure of the water increases with depth. • Hydro-electric power stations can produce a great deal of power very cheaply.

  4. Advantages • Once the dam is built energy is free • No waste or pollution such as co2 into the atmosphere. • More reliable than other renewable energy sources i.e. Solar, Wind and Tidal Power • Electricity can be generated constantly

  5. Disadvantages • Very Expensive to Build • Destroys Habitats by flooding upstream. • Few Suitable Sites. It needs a large volume of water. • Water Quality and Quantity Downstream can be affected, which can affect plant life.

  6. Why it is Better! • It is one of the most reliable renewable resources. Large rivers like the Bann and Foyle system contain a large volume of water and that is why we think these would be good places for dams. • It is more reliable than wind, tidal and Solar power because it can constantly generate energy.

  7. Conclusion • So we think that Hydroelectric Power is the best power as it is quite suitable for Northern Ireland because we have a lot of rainfall. • We chose this because it is more reliable and efficient than other renewable resources i.e. wind ,solar and tidal power because it can constantly generate energy.
