  2. NEW ZEALAND • New Zealand is an island country in Pacific Ocean situated 1,500 kilometers east of Australia across the Tasman Sea and roughly 1,000 kilometers south of the Pacific island areas of New Caledonia, Fiji and Tonga. Obr. 1.

  3. NEW ZEALAND • Capital city: Wellington • Cities: Auckland, Hamilton • Area: 268 680 km² • Population: 4 414 400 inhabitants • Density: 14/ km² Obr. 2.

Political system • New Zealandis a constitutional monarchy with a parliamentary democracy. • Head of the state is the Queen Elizabeth II represented by the Governor General. • Head of the government is Prime Minister. • The New Zealand Parliament holds legislative power and consists of the Queen and the House of Representatives.

  5. Geography • New Zealand is made up of two main islands and a number of smaller islands. • The two main islands the North Island and the South Island are separated by the Cook Strait. • The South Island is the largest landmass of New Zealand. The Southern Alps is a mountain range (there are 18 peaks over 3,000 meters).The North Island is less mountainous but is marked by volcanism. • The highest peak is Mount Cook (Aoraki)is3,754 metershight. Economy • Currency: New Zealand dollar (NZD, informally known as the “Kiwi dollar”) • Industry: agriculture, horticulture, fishing, forestry and mining • Export: meat, wood, wooden products, fish, diary products • Import: machinery and equipment, vehicles and aircrafts, petroleum, electronics, textiles, plastics

Additional information • New Zealand officially became a part of the UK in February 1840. • New Zealand was the first country in the world to let women vote (in 1893). • The name of the traditional Maori war dance is HAKA. • Sports :Rugby, golf, netball, tennis, cricket • Animals : kiwi (flightless bird), tuatara (reptile), katipo (spider), weta (insect)
