Container Services on Danube Present and Potential • Functioning: • Constantza – Giurgiu Free Zone - Domestic transit • Constantza – Belgrade – Constanta • International transit • (line designed to ship max 80TEU/barge, 10 TEU in length, 4 in row, 2 stacks high, transit time 7 days; ZIM, MSC, CMA CGM, Maersk, Hapag Lloyd and CSCL are among the regular users ) • Advantages: • - lower fees than other seaports (Rijeka, Koper, etc.) • Environmentally Sustainable Transport • Potential to expand westwards to Novi Sad, Vukovar, and Budapest) • Perspectives: • COLD Project - An Assessment of the Opportunities and Risks of Container Transport on the Danube River between Austria and the Black Sea • MARCO POLO Programme
