  1. PAL 1/18/10 • Consider how entropy changes with volume. To represent “volume,” we will use a 2-D grid. Assume atoms are indistinguishable and cannot occupy the same space. • How many different ways can you place three coins (representing atoms) in a 2X2 grid? What is the corresponding entropy? • How many different ways can you place three coins in a 2X3 grid? What is the corresponding entropy? • Does the entropy increase or decrease as you increase the “volume”?

  2. Consider how entropy changes with temperature. The greater the temperature, the greater the internal energy. If all the internal energy comes from individual atoms’ kinetic energy, then U=SKE. Let the individual KE of an atom be represented by the number on a die. Assume atoms are indistinguishable. • How many different ways can you have the total KE of three dice be 5? What is the corresponding entropy? • How many different ways can you have the total KE of three dice be 8? What is the corresponding entropy? • Does the entropy increase or decrease as you increase the “temperature”?
