What is Musawah? • Musawah is a global movement for equality and justice in the Muslim family • Musawah brings together NGOs, activists, scholars, practitioners, policy makers and grassroots women and men who are working for equality and justice in Muslim families • Musawah was launched at a Global Meeting from 13-17 February 2009 in Kuala Lumpur

Key Objectives • To strengthen women’s voicesdemanding equality and justice in the family at the national, regional and international levels • To build analysis and strategiesthat bring togetherscholarship and experience regarding Muslim jurisprudence, human rights principles, fundamental rights and constitutional guarantees, and the lived realities of families in Muslim countries and communities • To provide those advocating for rights in the family with tools and resources; and • Toraise the visibilityof initiatives advocating for equality and justice within Muslim families.

  4. Musawah Principles • Musawah calls for: • Equality, non-discrimination, justice and dignity as the basis of all human relations; • Full and equal citizenship for every individual • Marriage and family relations based on equality and justice, with men and women sharing equal rights and responsibilities.

  5. Realisation of these principles entails laws and policies that ensure: • The family as a place of security, harmony, support and personal growth for all its members • Marriage as a partnership of equals, with mutual respect, affection, communication and decision-making between the partners • The equal right to choose a spouse or choose not to marry, and to enter into marriage only with free and full consent; and the equal right to dissolve the marriage, as well as equal rights upon its dissolution • Equal rights and responsibilities with respect to property, including acquisition, ownership, enjoyment, administration, disposition and inheritance; and • Equal rights and responsibilities of parents in matters relating to their children.

Musawah Publications and Website • Three publications launched February 2009: • Musawah Framework for Action (principles behind Musawah) • Wanted: Equality and Justice in the Family (compilation of theoretical papers) • Home Truths: A Global Report on Equality in the Family (information on family laws from 30 countries) • Musawah website: http://www.musawah.org

  8. Future Plans: Knowledge Building • Focus: Facilitate access to existing knowledge and the creation of new knowledge about Muslim women’s rights in the family • Responses: Respond to current issues and debates through information about the issue concerned to generate a more informed public debate • Research:Long-term, comprehensive knowledge building projects that have a conceptual thematic focus • Capacity building: e.g., Short Course on Understanding Islam from a Rights Perspective, August 2009.

  9. Future Plans: Movement Building • Communications and Information: Development of strategy to share the Musawah message • Outreach: Regional focal points (including for minority contexts) to share information on information, issues and events at the national and regional levels • Triennial Global Meeting:The next Global Meeting will be in Cairo in 2012 • Networking: Networking with regional and international organisations and networks that focus on Muslim women’s issues to minimize duplication of  work, explore possibilities of joint work, and to strengthen alliances.

  10. Future Plans: International Advocacy • Preparatory work: Explore where/how Musawah intersects with international /regional bodies and mechanisms such as the OIC, Arab League, African Union, UPR, Special Rapporteurs, as well as entry points for engagement with these bodies and mechanisms • CEDAW Committee: Immediately engage with the CEDAW Committee on issues of Muslim women’s rights in the family, through input into general recommendation on economic consequences of marriage and its dissolution as well as distribution of documents and information
