Korea in WWII • Korea had been occupied by Japan since 1910 • USSR came in at the end of WWII from the north & liberated them • The US came in at the end of WWII from the south & liberated them • Met at the 38th parallel • USSR set up a new gov’t in the north, US hoped for reunification (not communist)

  3. II. North Korea attacks South Korea • North Korea attacks South Korea in June 1950 • N. Korea hadthe better army & surprise on their side • The UN issues a sanction • N Korea ignores it, UN decided to assist S Korea • 16 countries sent help • The US reacts quickly • Provides 350,000 soldiers

  6. UN forces push back up to the 38th parallel • At that point, USSR wants to stop the fight at the 38th and leave Korea split • China says they’ll join the fight if UN crosses the parallel • UN crosses hoping to force reunification

  8. III. China sends in troops • They are very effective, UN forces are pushed south • UN gives up on reunification, aims to re-establish the 38th parallel • Talks drag on for a very long time, finally a truce is settled in July 1953 • Still no treaty to this day

  10. IV. South Korea Today • 1960’s-economy had made progress • 1987-SK held direct elections • First time since Korean War ended • Nation has been moving successfully toward democracy • 1990’s-SK was an economic powerhouse

  11. V. North Korea Today • Kim Il Sung (Great Leader) • State owned industries and collective farms increased output • 1960’s-growth stopped • Refused to undertake economic reforms • Kim Jong Il (Dear Leader) • Failed policies and floods brought famine • Numerous human rights violations
