  1. Program Overview • Provide energy, waste and productivity assessments to small and medium sized manufacturers • No direct cost • Comprehensive • Confidential • Unbiased

  2. Industrial Assessment Center (IAC) Program History • Funded by the DOE • IACs in operation since 1976 • IACs have recommended cumulative cost savings of over $1 billion • Technical assistance has been provided to over 11,000 plants • More than 2,000 engineering students have been trained

  3. Geographic Coverage

  4. Program Features • Assessments provided at no direct cost • Experienced engineering faculty, staff and engineering students conduct the assessments • The is no obligation to act on any recommendation • Client proprietary information is protected • Not an academic exercise

  5. Program Benefits • Plants receive objective information • Students receive hands-on training and experience in a wide range of systems • Universities build valuable relationships and maintain a practical focus • Manufacturers can assess the latest technologies and practices • National reductions in energy usage, making businesses more competitive and reducing stress on the national energy grid

  6. The UIC-IAC • A division of the Energy Resources Center (ERC), UIC’s energy consulting arm • ERC established in 1973 as a “fast response” team of energy experts capable of quickly extending • Technical expertise • Advice • Professional assistance • The IAC draws upon ERC faculty and staff to lead assessments, as well as working with other ERC units to leverage expertise

  7. Other Items of Note • Over $25,000 in scholarships won in the last three years by UIC-IAC students • 100% graduation rate • Real world experience before graduation • All students have a job before graduation

  8. The UIC-IAC • 9th year • 172 assessments to date • 19 general industry groups assessed • Over 1,300 recommendations made

  9. UIC-IAC Geographic Coverage +Wisconsin

  10. Assessment Day • After arriving, the IAC team meets with plant personnel to receive background information • Plant walkthrough, identifying the energy-using systems • For the remainder of the day, the IAC team collects data, monitors equipment and gathers information on all energy using systems in the plant • At the end of the day, wrap-up meeting to go over initial findings

  11. What is expected of clients? • Lunch • Your time on the day of the assessment • Someone with knowledge of the plant and its systems • Your cooperation after the assessment • We cannot get every piece of data in one day; we will request some additional information • The more cooperation we get the better your report

  12. What you can expect from us • An energy report in 60 days • Professionalism and experience • Average student experience of 10 assessments • Follow up support • Full transparency • An assessment team of 8-12 students • Fully safety trained

  13. Assessment Timeline • Client provides 12 months of utility bills and completed pre-assessment form to determine eligibility • UIC-IAC conducts a one or two-day site visit and performs the assessment • After 60 days, client receives a report detailing the analysis, findings and recommendations • Six to nine months later, follow-up phone calls made by UIC-IAC and Program Manager

  14. Assessment Report • Energy bill analysis • True energy costs • Recommendations • Detailed costs and savings • Complete explanation of methodology and assumptions • Fully transparent • Tools to assist in implementation of recommendations

  15. What is in the report?

  18. UIC-IAC ResultsFY2005 - FY2009 • For each plant • Average medium plant implemented savings: $146,000/yr • Average overall plant implemented savings: $385,000/yr • Average overall simple payback: 2.6 years • Overall implementation rate: 63% • Tallied for FY2005 through first half of FY2009

  19. FY2010 Assessment Goals • Save client 15% of total energy budget within capital investment guidelines • Introduce three new recommendations per assessment report
