Romance • A Romance usually focuses on a central love story in which two characters falling in love struggles to maintain and justify their love. • Often romances have an emotionally satisfying “happy” ending, however this is not required • Elements of Romances: • Obstacles for lovers to overcome: • Betrayal • Unrequited love • Disapproving parent • Jealous ex-boyfriend/girlfriend • Rival • Romantic Settings • Romantic encounters • Happy ending (optional)

Historical Fiction • Historical fiction combines a fictionalized story with actual historical events, figures, or eras. • A Challenge for the writer or historical fiction is to artfully incorporate accurate historical information into the story • Elements of Historical Fiction • Realistic portrayal of characters • Authentic settings • Period-specific dress, manners, attitudes and ideas • Period-specific dialogue • Historical events • Historical figures

Speculative Fiction - (Sci-Fi Fantasy) • A Sci-Fi/Fantasy story is usually set in alternate worlds. • Often future focused and expands on current scientific trends. • Magic and supernatural creatures play a significant role in fantasy • Sci-Fi/Fantasy Elements • Science • Technology/inventions • Time travel • Time shifts • Extraordinary settings: planets, under an ocean, other dimensions • Future time setting • Aliens • Catastrophes: manmade, or natural • Magical powers • Suspense • Supernatural Powers • Imaginary creatures
