  1. Literary Genres – Science Fiction Literature 8 – Mrs. Munnier

  2. Science Fiction • Is a genre of fiction • Involves elements of science – the stories always involve both partially true and partially fictitious laws or theories of science • Is almost always set in the future

  3. Science Fiction • Is never completely believable. (If the plot, characters, and setting were completely believable, the genre would be easily confused with fantasy.)

  4. Science Fiction • The plots create different situations than those that would have been possible in the past, and those that would be possible in the present. Think “futuristic.”

  5. Science Fiction Includes a human element and seeks to explain the effects that new developments may have on mankind in the future.

  6. Early Works of Science Fiction • The War of the Worlds by H. G. Wells

  7. More Early Works of Science Fiction • 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea by Jules Verne

  8. More Modern Science Fiction • Titles include Brave New World by Alduous Huxley and 1984 by George Orwell.

  9. More Modern Science Fiction
