Motivation • Dissemination of the JPEG 2000 has been slow. • There are few commercial plug-ins that enable users to create JPEG 2000 documents • sporadic use • not readily available to the average user. • Users should be enabled to easily test the benefits of the new file format, and compare it to the well known ones (TIFF, JPEG, GIF, etc.)

  3. Projects at the RIT • On-line image conversion service • Improve dissemination • Annotation of J2K images • Demonstrate archival advantages of JP2 family

  4. On-line image conversion service • Idea: • Enable on-line image conversion to JPEG 2000 • No JPEG 2000 plug-in or application needed to convert image • Free plug-ins for browsers are available

Annotation of J2K images • Idea: • Any region within the image can be annotated in XML format (using asoc, roid, and lbl boxes) • Create complete set of tools to: • Annotate JP2 images • Upload JP2 images to server, automatically extract annotations from the image, parse that information, and transfer them to an Oracle database • Tool to search JP2 Metadata information stored in database and return not only the info, but also the image (thumbnail and full version)

  10. Principle: Annotation Creation • Currently the following data is stored for each region • User Name • Description • Current Date • Coordinates (x, y, width, height) • Any additional form of metadata can be added

  12. XML Format • Annotations are stored in a new box called “jimk” in XML Format

  13. Client Interface • Client interface supports: • Ability to upload JP2 images using a web interface and automatically extract XML information into an Oracle Database • As a result: • JP2 Images are searchable based on their embedded metadata information
