  1. Welcome Back! Mrs. “G” Patterson English II 2011-2012 Room B204

  2. Welcome Back!!! Summer is over  You’re officially Sophomores – This means that you survived your freshman year of high school!  What are you expecting of yourself this year?

  3. What will I learn in English II? You will continue to increase and refine your reading and communication skills while focusing on the concept of culture and community and examining how these influences shape identity and perspective. You will read and analyze works of world literature, with emphasis on analysis of how stylistic choices and rhetorical elements share tone in persuasive and argumentative texts.

  4. Expectations Students must come to class each day prepared to interact. Much of the knowledge gained will be from listening and learning from one another, not only just the teacher. Effort, mutual respect and encouragement are expected from each student on a daily basis.

  5. Textbooks for English II • Holt McDougal Literature – Grade 10 • SpringBoard English Textual Power – Level 5

  6. Summer Reading for English II • The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien AND • The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold OR • Oedipus by Sophocles (available online)

  7. Additional Novels for English II • Students may be asked to purchase additional novels throughout the school year. However, both students and parents will receive adequate advanced notice of any required books titles

  8. 1” binder for ENGLISH ONLY! notebook paper one spiral notebook 5 dividers pens/pencils/highlighters 3X5 index cards Supplies for English II

  9. Class Rules – Follow the 3 P’s BE PUNCTUAL BE PREPARED BE POLITE

  10. BE PUNCTUAL Be in your chair when the bell rings Turn assignments in on the due date Be alert in class…NO SLEEPING!

  11. BE PREPARED Bring all materials to class every day (binder, pen/pencil/highlighter, SpringBoard text, novel of study, etc.) Complete all preparatory work (reading, reflection, homework) so that you are ready to participate in class Keep track of all due dates, quizzes and tests using a planner or class calendar (or even your phone!)

  12. BE POLITE Respect yourself. Respect your peers. Respect your environment. Respect authority. Actively listen. Support each other. Encourage one another. Monitor your own behavior.

  13. Just a few others… NO FOOD. NO DRINKS. (Water = Exception) All communication devices should be turned OFF and out of sight! No make-up, combs, hairbrushes, mirrors, nail polish, nail files, lotion or any other personal grooming implement in the classroom. Do not deface (i.e. draw, doodle, write, carve, scratch, put chewing gum under/on) any of the furniture, walls, filing cabinets, bookshelves, windows, carpet, etc.

  14. CLASS PROCEDURESF.A.Q.s Who? What? When? Where? How?

  15. What do I do when I first get to class? Sign-in: Mark your initials in the Attendance Binder under the date. Once the bell rings for class: If you are in the room and have not signed in, you will be marked “Tardy.” If you are NOT in the room and have not signed in, you will be marked “Absent.”

  16. Then what? Consult the board for the daily objective (“I can…”) and agenda Take your seat and begin your journal entry or “warm-up” exercise. These are to be done individually, and therefore no talking is necessary.

  17. What’s the tardy policy? Per the CHHS Student/Parent Handbook: 1st Tardy = Warning 2nd Tardy = Teacher-Student Conference 3rd Tardy = Teacher Consequence (*Detention) and Parent Phone Call 4th Tardy = Office Referral

  18. What do I do with my assignments? All assignments to be graded must have your FIRST AND LAST NAME, DATE, and CLASS PERIOD. Turn in assignments by putting them in your class period’s INBOX.

  19. What about “late” work? I do NOT accept late work of any kind – daily, quiz or major grades.

  20. But…but…but…what if I was absent? If you missed class, look in your class period’s “Absent” folder for handouts. See Mrs. Patterson to schedule a time to make-up a quiz or test. You will be allowed one school day for every school day missed, plus one additional day, to make up work or tests (per the CHHS Student/Parent Handbook). Please write “Absent” on top of any assignments completed. If you submit all make-up work on time, you have the opportunity to receive full credit.

  21. Hall Pass Policy • Each student will receivethree hall passes per six-weeks. This means that each student may leave the classroom no more than threetimes a grading period (with the exception of emergency situations such as a nurse’s pass, etc.).

  22. Hall Pass Policy • Every six-weeks, each unused pass is worth five on a daily grade, homework grade, or quiz grade. • Students may choose the daily, homework, or quiz grade on which they wish the extra credit points to be applied. Extra credit points will be applied at the end of the six-weeks.

  23. What is Academic Honesty? The English Language Arts Department at Colleyville Heritage High School expects that all work turned in is the student’s own work. This bans all forms plagiarism and cheating including: copying; cutting and pasting; presenting collaborative work as independent work; fabricating data, information and sources; and failing to use proper citations. After any infraction, a student will be referred to the Academic Integrity Council. More information can be found on the CHHS website: http://www.gcisd-k12.org/chhs/site/default.asp.

  24. Non-verbal or verbal warning – eye contact, movement, verbal reminder, statement of the appropriate behavior, or the student will be asked to stop the undesired behavior. Student will be asked to stay after class or school to discuss the infraction. What happens if I break a rule or do not follow procedures?

  25. Direct consequence will be implemented for the inappropriate student behavior. For example, afternoon detention, office referral. Parent will be notified and conference may be requested. What happens if I break a rule or do not follow procedures?

  26. What about my grade?

  27. When do I get a progress report? Consult Skyward Family Access once a week to keep track of grades. However, be patient with your teacher  All students will receive a progress report three weeks into the six weeks grading period.
