  7. The Crusades The Crusades were a series of battles between Western Europeans (Christians) and Muslims over control of the Holy Land. Causes of the Crusades • Growth of the Seljuk Turks’ empire • Crusaders were motivated by religious zeal and the desire to win wealth and power. • Others were motivated by a sense of adventure • Pope Urban II hoped to heal the split between the Western and Eastern European Church.
