  2. When did the civil war occur? The beginning of the Civil War is April 12th 1861. The war started when the Confederates made an attack on Fort Sumner. The brutal war lasted a whole four years and ended on April 9th 1865.

  3. The States Divide At this point, many states had already seceded. Meaning they split apart to form their own countries. There was the Federal Union, (Also known as “The North”) and the Confederate States of America. (“The South”) VS.

  4. The Union States The following states were part of the Union:~Oregon, California, Minnesota, Iowa, Kansas, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine.

  5. The Confederate States The following states were part of the confederacy:Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia, Florida, South Carolina, North Carolina, and Virginia.

  6. The other states who were not a part of the Union OR the Confederacy were called the Border States. They were Pro-Slavery, but wanted to stick with the Union because of their Anti-Secession. These states were:Missouri, Kentucky, Maryland, Delaware, and West Virginia

  7. Leaders Like all wars, both sides had to had their leaders. The Union had leaders like: Abraham Lincoln, Ulysses S. Grant, William T. Sherman, and John BrownWhile the Confederacy had leaders such as:Jefferson Davis, Robert E. Lee, Stonewall Jackson, and Braxton Bragg.

  8. John Brown One of the leasers of the Union was John Brown. He was very helpful to the Union for helping with slaves. He was born in Torrington, Connecticut in 1800, and executed in 1859. Brown was an active supporter of the underground railroad, and helped to establish and organization to protect fugitive slaves from their captors. He was also responsible for the cold-blooded massacre of five white settlers in a pro-slavery town.

  10. Jefferson Davis Jefferson Davis was a leader for the Confederacy. He was born in Kentucky on June 3rd, 1808. He grew up and began service in the U.S. Army in 1828. He also was elected to the House of Representatives in November 1845. Davis served as a U.S. Secretary of War, but was captured by the Union.

  11. Jefferson Davis

  12. Allies There were several alliances formed during the Civil War. But the biggest one was Britain and France joining together with the Confederates. The South now had two huge countries on their side.

  13. Battles of the War The Civil War was completely long and brutal, with battles like:The first battle at Fort Sumter~ April 12th 18611st Battle of Bull Run~ July 21st 1861Battle of Gettysburg~ July 1st- 3rd 18632nd Battle of Fort Fisher~ January 13th-15th 1865Battle of Appomattox Courthouse- April 9th 1865

  16. Battle of Gettysburg

  17. Battle of Fort Fisher

  19. Weapons • There were many complicated and hard to use weapons used in the Civil War, here are just a few:~The Napoleon~Sabers~Minie Ball~ Canistars

  20. The Napoleon The Napoleon was first made and used in 1857. It was used for attack and defense by both the Union and the Confederacy. It was commonly used in the war. The gun itself was light, was loaded in the muzzle, and was made of bronze

  21. Saber The saber was used throughout the entire civil war. These cavalry swords were heavy, with 42 in. blades. They were commonly used, but only by the people who could handle them. Because of their weight, people had trouble first handling them.

  22. Minie Ball The minie ball was manufactured in 1848, and pretty much revolutionized weaponary. The minie ball was a small and hollow bullet that spun when it was shot from a gun. The average soldier could hit a target 250 yards away when shooting it.

  23. Canistar Like the saber, canistars were used throughout the war. It was a scattershot projectile consisting of small iron balls. They were particulary lethal when shot at a range of 250 yards.

  24. The End of the War The Civil War ended of April 9th 1865. The surrender of Robert E. Lee was what ended the whole thing. The surrender meant a win for the Union! The end of the war was official with the signing of the treaty at Appomattox Courthouse.

  25. How It Affected America’s Future The Civil War was a major part of history that changed America. The Civil War changed the way people thought of when they thought the words “Free country.” At least in my opinion. When the Civil War was over, it showed the world that America could pull through in the end.

  26. Book VS. Website According to Wikipedia.com, Fort Sumter was being built in 1827.But according to the book Fort Sumter, it began being built in 1829.This shows how inaccurate websites can be
