Thorin was taken by the elves!

  5. Literary Devices Simile Onomatopoeia A figure of speech that compares two unlike things using a word such as likeor as. “The entrance to the path was like a sort of arch leading into a gloomy tunnel…” (Tolkien 140) “…it was trying to poison him to keep him quiet, as small spiders do to flies…” (155) Aword that sounds like its meaning “Splash it fell in the water!” (143)

  6. Literary Devices Personification Giving a inanimate object a human attribute. “… and the quiet was so deep that their feet seemed to thump along while the trees leaned over them and listened.” (140)

  7. Questions • Who fell into the dangerous river that Bilbo and the dwarves come across? • What happened every night that roused the dwarves and Bilbo? • Why was the spider surprised when Bilbo had taken his sword out to fight? • How was Bilbo able to trick the spiders and free the dwarves?
