  2. Five-Minute Check (over Lesson 12–3) Main Idea and Vocabulary Key Concept: Metric Units of Capacity Example 1: Convert Larger Units to Smaller Units Example 2: Convert Units of Capacity Example 3: Convert Units of Capacity Lesson Menu

  3. I will convert metric units of capacity. • liter • milliliter Main Idea/Vocabulary

  4. KC 1

  5. 3 L = mL Convert Larger Units to Smaller Units As part of a science experiment, a plant was given three liters of water each week for twelve weeks. How many milliliters of water were given to the plant in all? A liter is larger than a milliliter, so multiply. 1 L = 1,000 mL, so multiply 3 by 1,000. 3 × 1,000 = 3,000 3 L = 3,000 mL 3,000 mL × 12 = 36,000 mL Multiply 3,000 mL by 12 weeks. Example 1

  6. Convert Larger Units to Smaller Units Answer: So, 3 L = 3,000 mL. In 12 weeks, 3,000 × 12 or 36,000 mL of water were given to the plant in all. Example 1

  7. A B C D Convert 17 liters to milliliters. • 170 mL • 1,700 mL • 17,000 mL • 170,000 mL Example 1

  8. 850 mL = L 850 Write as a decimal. 850 1,000 850 mL = L or 0.85 L 1,000 Model an Array How many liters is 850 milliliters? Estimate850 mL < 1,000 mL, so the number of liters is less than 1. THINK 850 mL is what part of 1,000 mL? Answer:So, 850 mL = 0.85 L. Example 2

  9. A B C D How many liters is 121 milliliters? • 121 L • 12.1 L • 1.21 L • 0.121 L Example 2

  10. Model an Array The Jackson family bought two cases of bottled water. Each case has 28 bottles with 250 mL of water in each bottle. Find the total number of liters in the two cases. First, find the total number of milliliters in one case. Multiply. 28 ×250 = 7,000 Example 3

  11. Model an Array There are 2 cases, so multiply 7,000 by 2 to find the total number of milliliters in both cases. Multiply. 7,000 ×2 = 14,000 Next, convert 14,000 milliliters to liters. 1,000 mL = 1 L, so divide 14,000 by 1,000. 14,000 ÷1,000 = 14 Answer: So, 14,000 mL = 14 L. The total amount of water in the two cases is 14 liters. Example 3

  12. A B C D Jude bought 3 cases of soda. Each case has 24 cans with 500 mL of soda in each can. Find the total number of liters in the two cases. • 3.6 L • 36 L • 360 L • 3,600 L Example 3
