  1. Calsulin in the management of Type 1 Diabetes

  2. Background Today intensive insulin therapy is the gold standard for therapy in patients with type 1 diabetes Blood glucose levels Intake of CHO Physical exercise Insulin dose

  3. Background • Calsulin is a simple tool developed for the establishment of insulin dose taken into account the following parameters: • Blood glucose levels • Intake of carbohydrates • Intensity of physical exercise

  4. Aim and design of the study • The present project aims to demonstrate the efficacy of Calsulin in improving metabolic control as assessed by HbA1c in patients with type 1 diabetes undergoing intensive insulin therapy. • Inclusion criteria: • 40 patients affected by type 1 diabetes • Age range: 18-65 years • Disease duration > 1 year Exclusion criteria: • Insulin requirement (I.R.) > 1.2 IU/Kg/die

  5. Methods • Patients was randomized 1:1 and followed-up with visits every 3 months • HbA1c and daily insulin requirement was evaluated at 0 and 3 months • Statistical analysis: Paired t test (two tailed) was used to analyze the differences of HbA1c and daily insulin requirement between two groups

  6. Clinical features (data are mean  SD)

  7. Results at 3 months (data are mean  SD)

  8. Results at 3 months (data are mean  SD)

  9. Results at 3 months HbA1c (%) I.R.(IU/Kg/die)

  10. Conclusion Data showed an improvement in the HbA1c at 3 months in the Calsulin treated group, however the result wasn’t statistically significant analyzing the differences of HbA1c in the two groups Calsulin is an acceptable and practical tool to manage insulin dose and it can improve the overall metabolic control, as shown by a reduction of HbA1c Disadvantages: display not clear, difficult to quantify physical exercise and to choose adeguate insulin ratio
