  3. Type 1 Diabetes • Autoimmune Disease • White blood cells attack & destroy islet cells in pancreas which produce insulin • Absolute insulin deficiency • Symptoms: polyuria, polydipsia, weight loss • Requires lifelong treatment with insulin given by injection or subcutaneous infusion

  4. Type 1 Diabetes • One of the most common chronic diseases of childhood • In the US: • 13,000 new childhood diagnoses per year • Prevalence for ages 0-19 years is: 1/300 – 1/500 • Number of new patients annually has tripled in the past 20 years www.cdc.gov
