  1. Highway Resurfacing Materials Cost Estimate ToolRichard D. BellowsCVEN - 689 Applications of GIS to Civil Engineering Background: The conventional method used by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) in Karnes City Area Office is every year measure roadways using a distance measurement instrument (DMI) and a measuring wheel, which took on average of 3 days to obtain roadway geometries. After all the sections were collected, they then were entered into a database that included the cost of material per designated unit and a estimated cost was calculated, which took an additional day. Alternative: An alternative method is the use Geographic Information Systems (GIS) for collecting the roadway geometries and Visual Basic Editor in ArcMap to calculate the estimated cost of materials. Process of Developing a Estimated Cost Tool Location of UserForm in VBA Editor Location of VBA Editor in ArcMap Map of I-37 in Live Oak County, Texas Example of the Cost of 5 inches of HMA UserForm for Estimated Cost Tool Part of the Code of the UserForm that Assigns the Cost Values to the Materials Conclusions: In conclusion, the use of GIS to obtain roadway geometries is an appropriate alternative to manually collecting them with the use of a DMI and measuring wheel. Using this method will reduce the time required to generate resurfacing cost estimates from an average of 4 days to a few minutes. The use of the Visual Basic Editor in ArcMap to create a UserForm is convenient since the geometries of selected sections can be automatically added. A roadway feature class with a higher accuracy of roadway lengths could minimize the difference from conventional estimated cost.
