  1. Miss Moshier needs your help. She dropped a box of supplies and now they are all mixed together. There has to be a way to sort out these different materials from the mixture… Matter Mix-Up

  2. Using the materials provided, sort out the different substances in this mixture into FIVE separate piles of their own. Follow the steps of the scientific method to complete your task. • Materials in the Mixture: • Barley • Sand • Salt • Glitter • Iron Filings Matter Mix-Up

  4. Procedure Steps to Separate 1.Remove iron filings using a magnet 2. Remove glitter using the balloon 3. Add water (salt will dissolve, sand will sink and barley will float) 4. Scoop barley off the top with paper 5. Pour water through filter & sand will stay 6. Boil water to evaporate and salt will stay

What step had to be done last and why? If sugar was used instead of salt, would you have to change the procedure? Explain your answer. Explain how the balloon helped you in sorting the mixture.
