  1. Haverhill STEM Update

  2. Vision highlights • All students will have the knowledge and skills in Science, Engineering, and Technology needed to ensure they are college and career ready. • In their Science classes, students explore and investigate Science and its application to Engineering and Technology.

  3. Status and Gap analysis • Elementary and Middle Schools • Engineering and Technology Standards are included in the K-8 classes, but teachers are not comfortable teaching them. • There is limited Science, Engineering, and Technology equipment. • High School • A limited amount of Engineering and Technology is incorporated into the High School Science classes. • Two dual-enrollment, Introduction to Engineering courses are offered in conjunction with UMass, Lowell. • Support • There are a limited number of resources available to support the STEM program.

Goal #1: Strengthen STEm K-8 and increase student engagement • Explore Science from Scientists and determine how it can be used most effectively in Haverhill. • Promote DIGITS for all 6th grade classes. • Meet with elementary teachers during grade level meetings to discuss STEM. • Develop Google Drive as a means of district-wide communication. • Provide lists of free and inexpensive resources for teachers. • Develop MCAS review binders for 5th and 8th grades.

Goal #2: Align K-8 technology literacy curriculum with mass framework • Alignment plan must be based on the current model of using ESPs in the computer labs. • The plan will include how the technology will be introduced to the students and how it will be incorporated into the classroom instruction. • Teachers and ESPs need PD for the technology as well as the developed plan.

Goal #3: Strengthen the stem Academy at hhs • Promotion of the Academy Information nights Twitter, Facebook, Website, TV, etc. Videos • Supports for students Academic and programmatic supports • Unique opportunities for students Courses (Intro to STEM Careers, Capstone Project) Field trips and guest speakers Internships STEM Club

  7. Goal #4: Develop a district-wide set team • Determine the teachers and administrators who will serve on the SET Team and a time for the meetings • Develop a Vision and Action Plan

  8. Goal #5: Procure funding for stem initiatives • Mass Life Science Grant Proposal submitted for $100k The funding will provide 1-to-1 devices throughout the HHS Life Science classes • Develop list of free resources for teachers • Develop list of funding sources for teachers • Find funding for the MS Science and Engineering Fair • Find funding for MS Science and Engineering Equipment • Find funding to expand 1-to-1 device classrooms to the rest of the HHS Science department

Successes and Challenges • Successes • MS Science and Engineering Fair • Teachers throughout the district willing to support STEM program • STEM promotion at Curriculum Night, Parent-Teacher Conferences, Academy Night • Public relations person is going to help promote STEM • Challenges • Limited resources • Moving beyond NCLB • Finding ways to involve all elementary teachers and classes
