  3. Why incorporate STEM into your school year? To utilize logical thinking, problem-solving skills, and practical skills. To be given opportunities to creatively work with others, and the time to try again when solutions do not work. STEM education plays a critical role in enabling the U.S. to remain the economic and technological leader of the global marketplace of the 21st century.

  6. Tote of Ten is your Design Challenge

  7. Tote of Ten STEM K to 2nd Design Brief Background /Read Aloud: Press Here by Herve’ Tullet. This is a number sense picture book using subitizing. Design Challenge: After reading Press Here, by Herve’ Tullet, you will create at least 3 different representations of 10. Each representation must fit on the 3 x 5 index card provided. Then you will design and build a tote to transport your tens.

Criteria: Your Tote of Ten must: • Hold three or more different representations of the value 10 • Be closed around the edges, but able to open and close with ease • Have 2 carrying handles • No larger than 6” x 6” ( may view model of the size) • Be colorful, creative and neat Materials: You may select from these items: index cards card stock construction paper string or yarn paper fasteners/brads rubber bands sticky dots Tools: Scissors hole punch pushpin paper drill ruler crayons/markers/colored pencils/pencils Targeted Standard of Learning: Mathematics SOL Listed on your copy Targeted Standard for Technological Literacy: Standard 9 • Students will develop an understanding of engineering design.
