  1. IPS/Butler Lab School 60 Middle School Curriculum Night August 31, 2017

Who Are We? • Reggio-inspired (social constructivist) • Children are capable, responsible, creative • Children are heard • Teacher serves as a guide and learns with the students • Unique partnership with Butler University • Workshop teaching and project and inquiry-based teaching • Teacher created curriculum (not one size fits all) • Building classroom community with Responsive Classroom strategies

  3. Middle School Schedule • A and B days • 80 minutes of P.E./Visual Arts for 1 semester • 40 minutes of Spanish all year • 40 minutes of General Music, Orchestra, or Band all year

  4. Middle School Schedule • 90 minute academic blocks • ELA, Individuals and Societies, Math, Science • Advisory • Student Resource Time

English Language Arts • Units of study are mostly centered around writing • Workshop Structure (90 min.) • Independent reading • Small groups & conferring • Circle-Up (community building) • Mini-lesson • Guided practice • Whole Group • Closing Circle (read aloud) • Grammar with a Giggle • Vocabulary embedded in each unit • Homework: read 20-30 minutes every night • If you would like more, journal/write for 20 mins each night

  6. English Language Arts Units of Study • Writerly Life • Memoirs • The Literary Essay • Research-based Informational Writing • Writing Realistic Fiction • Historical Fiction • Commentary • Writing About Reading • The Art of Argument • Reading & Writing Habits (prep for summer)

  7. Individuals and Societies • Combined 6th/7th grade curriculum • Common themed Units combining 6th/7th grade standards and objectives • Ex. Unit 2: Ancient Civilizations & Dynasties • Ex. Unit 5: European “Takeoverism” (Exploration, Colonization, Imperialism, etc.) • Ex. Unit 7: The Modern World (WWI, Great Depression (Economics), & WWII) • Class will consist of discussions, debates, analyses of primary and secondary documents/multiple perspectives (pictures too), and projects.

  8. Science The Butler Lab School Middle School curriculum is a rich and diverse science curriculum based on the frameworks of Science for All Americans, Benchmarks for Science Literacy Project 2061, and Indiana Content Standards. Instruction will provide experience-based opportunities, integrate technology, differentiate instruction, and present lessons in a variety of formats to suit all learning styles.

Studio (Visual Arts) In middle school studio, students will explore various 2D and 3D art media, study the impacts of art and culture on societies around the world, and develop both written and oral reflection skills while assessing our own work and the work of others. The content, media, and skills that we explore are often guided by student interest, project work happening in other content areas, and current events. Students will learn about and be assessed on the following criteria, which are informed by Studio Habits of Mind: reflect, observe, express, envision, engage and persist, develop craft, stretch and explore, and understand art worlds.

  18. Music • Band & Orchestra Syllabus-- • Please note class procedures & Concert Calendar. • Bond Forms were sent home for school instruments. Bond forms must be signed & returned before students may take them home to practice. • Students need to practice 15 minutes a day.

  19. Music General Music--currently finishing unit on world instruments. Next Unit will be vocal music. Students will be working on music for “Little Mermaid Musical.”

Project Work • Looks different in any classroom and in any grade • K/1 has free choice and more flexibility • 2nd- 7th grade has more content which lends itself to teacher started but kid driven • It can start… • From a child’s interest • From a question • From content (teacher provocation) • It is all supported by inquiry • Each class will have at least 2 projects per year • Abby, our pedagogista, supports teachers in this area

Communication • Report cards four times a year • Narrative with the report card at the end of each semester • PIT Day (Parents in Touch) is September 27th • Teachers are open to communicating and building strong relationships with families. We ask that you email and call teachers during business hours. • Middle School Seesaw!

Passing Period Expectations • Peaceful • Hands to yourself (even if you are joking) • Talk respectfully to peers (no threats or name-calling) • Respond when a teacher calls your name by stopping, looking, and saying, “yes?” • Enter classroom peacefully and get started on First Five • Prepared • Binder, planner, book • Check you have all your items before AND after class • Once you enter the room, you need to wait until class starts and use a hall pass to get your items • Prompt • Arrive to class before the bell rings, in your seat, ready to go • Automatic call home starting September 18th • 3 peaceful, prepared or prompt reminders= lunch with teacher • If unsafe or consistently disruptive in halls = loss of passing periods for a week

Reset System • Reset in Classroom • For calming down, refocusing, still talking after quiet signal, not responding to redirections • Go to spot in room quickly and quietly (we will only ask once) • Reset in Buddy Classroom • If you refuse to reset in the classroom, argue about it, or classroom reset is not working • Go to buddy classroom spot quickly and quietly • Carefully close door and enter buddy room quietly • If the reset system if challenging for you… • We may practice during recess • Someone may need to come help you • After 1 week of practicing, refusal to go to buddy classroom = practice during lunch, recess, or after school

  31. Detention Policy • We want middle school to have FREEDOM • Passing periods • Recess with all classes • Lockers/bathrooms • Hall passes • Detention is to help remind you that with freedom comes RESPONSIBILITY • Not completing work in class • Not resetting in buddy classroom • Name calling • Threatening • Other (teacher will decide with Mrs. Kent or Mr. Smith) • After school Tuesdays and Thursdays 4-5pm • 3 detention sessions OR any suspension inside/outside school = lose sports privileges • The goal is to keep our classrooms and hallways productive, peaceful, and a place where everyone feels safe!
