  3. Overview • Male Nudes • Born and grew up as a Roman Catholic of English and Irish heritage in New York. Grew up with parents and five brothers and sisters. • Studied for a B.F.A. Mapplethorpe lived with his partner Patti Smith. They created art together, and kept a good relationship. • First photographs using a Polaroid camera. In the mid-1970s, acquired a Hasselblad medium-format camera and began taking photographs of a wide circle of friend. In the 1980s he refined his medium. • First studio was in Manhattan. • Died because of complications arising from AIDS. • found the Robert Mapplethorpe Foundation, Inc.
