Challenges • Stress • Shortage of staff • New technological demands and lack of support • Inadequate funding of health services • Poor maintenance of buildings and equipment • Low morale- lack of equipment and supplies • Impact of the HIV/AIDS Pandemic • Hopelessness • High mortality – unable to help

  3. Challenges – (Cont.) • High staff turnover • No recruitment and retention strategies • Impact of migration and loss of skills • Lack of fulfilment • As a practitioner • Discouragement and frustration • Culture/ethos of caring is lost • Culture of blame vs support and acknowledgement

  4. Challenges (cont) • Inadequate levels of supervision • Quality of work – unsatisfactory • Colleagues not doing their work – discipline issues • Negative perception of public health services • Politicising of issues e.g HIV/AIDS & TOP – contradictions and conflict • Poor leadership

  5. Challenges (cont.) • Personal and family environment of our patients – poverty, domestic violence and abuse • Home environment of health care workers themselves

  6. Developing a “turn around strategy” • Objective: “Bringing Christ back to the centre of the health care” • ‘Whom shall we send and who will go for us? • Every child of God in the health and related sector should heed the call: • Come let us build the health care services of our land………. WWJD?

Action Plan • Develop a prayer network – scan the needs, communicate and monitor developments • Individual focus – engage in the resistance movement • Strengthen personal relationship with the Lord, each day dedicating self and trusting him to guide and protect you • Be positive in word and action, resist negativism

  8. Taking the process forward • Need to broaden our network base, we believe we have started the process and we need to work on it • Group found that if we deal with real situations we are able to focus our discussions and together able to found solutions.
