  4. Page 4 1. What was the goal of Sir Ernest Shackleton? The goal was to be the first person to cross the polar ice cap. 2. Why did the crew leave the ship? The crew left the ship because it was crushed by the ice and was leaking badly. 3. Why were the men dragging the lifeboats? The men were dragging the lifeboats through the barren ice to reach open water.

  5. 4. Describe Elephant Island? Why did Shackleton decide to continue sailing with some of the crew members? Elephant Island was barren, with only rocks, ice, snow, and wind. Shackleton continued sailing with some of the crew members to South Georgia Island to try to get some help. 5. Why did the men land on the other side of the whaling station? They landed on the other side because the fresh water was gone and they were too weak to keep going.

Fortunately, the men had wood from old shipwrecks for fire, albatross eggs and seals to eat. So, they would be all right while waiting for their rescue. 7.
