  5. Page 22 1- This story is realistic fiction because the characters and events are like real life. 2- What is a diorama? A diorama is a scene reproduced in three dimensions by placing objects, figures, etc. in front of a painted background. 3- What does the science teacher ask the students to do? The science teacher asks the students to do a diorama about the food chain in Biscayne Bay.

  6. 4- How does Mrs. Frank (the librarian) like the dioramas? She likes them made from natural materials. 5- How does Mrs. Frank help Mari? Mrs. Frank helps Mari by showing her pictures of projects and finds books for her. 6- What does Mari first ask her mother to do for the project? She first asks her to get some boxes and give her some money.

  7. 7- Why does Marie go to the beach? She goes to the beach to collect some natural things for her project. 8-Why does Mari feel sad when she hears the other students talk about the project? She feels sad because she wants her parents to help her like her friends. Page 23 9- How does Mrs. Frank think about Mari's diorama? Explain your answer. She is impressed by Mari’s diorama and thinks it’s wonderful because she used things found in nature and put a lot of care and time in it.

She put sand, some shells, grass, sea weeds, coral, sponges, and animals made out of dough 11- Why is Mari glad that projects are displayed in the library? She is glad that projects are displayed in the library because she doesn’t want classmates to make fun of her project. 12- What does Mr. Sims do at the beginning? He acknowledged every student’s work and thanked them all for their hard work.

  9. 13- How does Marie feel before handing the prizes? After she wins the prize? Before handing the prizes, she felt sad and ashamed of her project but proud of all the effort she had put into it. After handing the prizes she felt happy and proud of what she did. 14- How does Mama help Mari? She helps Mari by taking her to the beach to look for things and most important by telling her that she herself should figure out what to do.

Why were the three projects distinguished from others? • Because they stayed close to the subject and used details • Why did Marie deserve the highest honor? _ She worked hard to present the food cycle _The project appeared to be a miniature version of what happens in nature. _ It is handmade _ It shows that using your head and hands can be more rewarding than asking the help from others.
