  16. "...communication, co-operation, preservation..."

  17. Humble beginnings • 1969 first DMU vehicle preserved… • Various other preservation developments during 1970s 80s and early 1990s • Large scale withdrawals 1992 to 1994 • March 1996: Railcar Monthly bulletin • … June 1996 The Railcar Association • All DMU groups are invited to attend this first gathering of like-minded enthusiasts from all over Britain… • In the evening, the day will culminate in a gathering over a fish and chip supper with added beer. • For this event the onus will be towards a relaxing, informal meeting of "DMU people". • The aim is to improve communication between the many groups now existing to help the sharing of knowledge, information, spares, etc.

  30. What do you need? • Valid Ultrasonic Axle Test Certificate • Valid Transit Move Certificate • Air Receiver Insurance Certificates • A TOC to do the move • A Network Rail path and schedule • Enough time and money to get all these in place

  31. Ultrasonic Axle Test • Must be carried out by a recognised Rail Industry Inspection Company • Normally valid for 3 years • Ideal opportunity to check grease condition in bearings • Need to ensure axle end caps refitted correctly and axlebox cover joints in good condition

  32. Loco Inspection • Fitness To Run examination required including; • General examination for loose, missing, damaged, detached parts • Security of roof hatches and any other access doors and hatches • Condition of axle and traction motor suspension bearings (and history) • Brake Operation and Leakage Test • Air Leakage Test

  33. Loco Inspection (more) • Tyre profiles and condition of treads need to be within Group Standard limits • Drawgear condition • Air hoses in date • External signage • Anything else affecting the safe movement of the loco

  34. Loco Inspection (even more) • No unauthorised modifications should have been carried out affecting the function and compatibility. • Working to a Vehicle Maintenance Instruction gives a better level of confidence in movements and inspections. • Maintenance history available for scrutiny

  35. Certification • Route clearance required for the specified route (weight, gauging etc) • Loco details need to be set up in the Rolling Stock Library with ownership details • Engineering Acceptance certificate needs to be issued in plenty time to make the loco ‘live’ or it won’t be going anywhere

  36. Risks • Loco develops a defect and is abandoned in the middle of nowhere • Loco picks up a major defect in the course of the move • TOC at risk of picking up delays and associated costs • Exposure to many factors out of our control
