Political Consequences ofThe Civil War • Freed enslaved people (aka “freedmen”) through the 13th Amendment • Gave African-Americans citizenship through the 14th Amendment • Gave black males the right to vote 15th Amendment • Ended the threat of secession • Strengthened the federal government in relation to the states • Caused a battle between the legislative branch (Congress) and the executive branch (President) over whose plan to use for Reconstruction • Caused Southerners to try to reassert their control over African-Americans through the black codes
