  2. What is Pandemic Flu? • A pandemic is a global disease outbreak. • Pandemic flu occurs when a new flu virus emerges and people have little or no immunity. • Pandemic flu can spread around the world in a short period of time.

  3. What is Avian Influenza? • Often confused with Pandemic flu. • They are not quite the same. • An Avian flu outbreak can result in a Pandemic. • Avian flu is bird flu. It is an influenza A virus that occurs naturally among birds. • Avian influenza is shed in the saliva , nasal secretions, and feces of infected birds.

  4. Avian Influenza in Humans • Influenza A has 3 subtypes. • H1N1, H1N2, H3N2. • The strains are constantly changing. • H5N1 is one of the Avian influenza viruses that has crossed the barrier to infect humans. • H5N1 is the most deadly. • There is little or no immune protection.

  5. Common Flu • Often referred to as seasonal flu • Some immunity • Vaccine is available • S/S: fever, chills, aches, cough, sore throat, fatigue

  6. Influenza Transmission • Human to human • Contaminated poultry to human • Avian virus-contaminated environment to human (CDC 2005)

  7. What can I do, as a healthcare professional, to protect my family and other close contacts from exposure

  8. Flu Prevention • Vaccination (protect yourself, protect your patients, protect your family) • Frequent hand washing (keep your hands away from your face) • Cough etiquette (Cover your cough with your sleeve or tissue) • Avoid crowds • Follow isolation precautions

  9. Flu Prevention • Stay healthy (Get enough rest, drink lots of fluids, eat healthy). • Stay home if you are sick. • If you can help it, stay away from others that are sick.

  10. What is PH Richland doing to prepare for a pandemic? • PHR is developing an organized plan (Influx of Infectious Patients Plan). • PHR is stockpiling certain supplies that will be utilized during the pandemic. • Many departments are responsible for developing a response plan specific to their area.

  11. What is PH Richland doing to prepare for a pandemic? • Training and education of all staff will be conducted to ensure preparedness. • Several disciplines are involved in the planning. • The planning committee is following the checklist that was developed by HHS and CDC.

  12. STANDARD PRECAUTIONS This applies to ALL patients. ALL blood and body fluids from ALL patients are to be treated as if they are infectious. USE YOUR PPE!

  13. PPE Requirements • DROPLET Isolation:Wear a regular MASK if you plan to be within 3 feet of the patient. • In some instances, safety glasses may be required. You are protecting the mucous membranes in your eyes, nostrils, and mouth!

  14. PPE Requirements • GLOVES • GOWNS • MASKS • SAFETY GLASSES Wear the appropriate PPE for the task being performed. THINK PATIENT SAFETY! THINK EMPLOYEE SAFETY! Break the infection chain!

  15. Remember the #1 way to stop the spread of infection. • WASH YOUR HANDS
