  2. Molluscs TWG Membership • Dr. Ralph Elston, Chairperson (AquaTechnics, USA) • Sra. Mariel Campalans(Universidad Católica Valparaíso-Chile) • Dr. Florencia Cremonte:(Centro Nacional Patagónico - Argentina)[Avr2007] • Dr. Karin Lohrmann(Universidad Católica del Norte –Chile) • Dr. Jorge Cáceres Martínez(Universidad Autónoma Metropolitano, Ensedada, Mexico) • Dr. Carmen Sousa (República de Panamá) [Jan2007] • The committee is seeking 2 to 3 additional experts, if such interested experts are identified, particularly as they add regional representation.

  3. Mollusc TWG Purpose • Purpose of the Mollusc TWG Group: • Determine if regional disease control measures should be recommended for the purpose of protecting the health of mollusks. Such regional disease control measures may be required for diseases that are not Reportable to the OIE because they do not meet the criteria required for international reportability. Nonetheless, there may be mollusc diseases of concern that can be managed on a regional basis to prevent their introduction into the Interamerican Region or to prevent their movement within the Interamerican Region.

  4. Mollusc TWG Work Plan • for diseases of concern to countries of the Inter-American committee, that are not OIE Reportable diseases using established OIE criteria applied to a regional scale. • (1) diseases that occur only outside of the InterAmerican Region • (2) diseases that occur in limited areas within the InterAmerican region • MTWG members may nominate such diseases for consideration • Gather information, analyze and use consensus process regarding recommendations for regional listings • Develop recommendations for prevention and control • The MTWG will record and report its activities and will draft recommendations to be submitted for consideration by the Interamerican Committee.

  5. Mollusk TWG Current Work • Solicited nominations for diseases of concern • Two diseases nominated and under discussion for recommendation for regional listing: • (1) Egg parasite of Pacific oysters, Crassostrea gigas Marteilioides chungmuensis. • (2) Abalone viral gangioneuritis (nominated prior to OIE listing) and now will serve to collect known information on commerce of abalone live and frozen product.

  6. Mollusk TWG • Complete consideration of current work and issue report this year • Consider new members for more thorough regional coverage • Consider member suggestions to evaluate specific risks of shellfish disease agent transfer with live edible mollusc transfer • Continue to accept shellfish disease entities for consideration – inter-regional: Perkinsus olseni and Xenohaliotis californiensis
