  3. Over 20,000 years ago, we began recording information about the world around us … Paleolithic drawings and carvings in the caves of Lascaux, France. Discovered in 1940. International Planetary Probe Workshop 10

  4. Examples of data generated every minute: And we continue this today at an exponential rate “Every day, we create 2.5 quintillion bytes of data – so much that 90% of the data in the world today has been created in the last two years alone.” http://www-01.ibm.com/software/data/bigdata/ International Planetary Probe Workshop 10

  5. The solution: “…having the skills to focus your information gathering efforts (better search tools?), so you can then capture, organise, adapt, retain, recall (store and preserve?) and apply the information you manage so you can achieve your goals faster and with less stress.” http://www.mindwerx.com/articles/information-overload-never-ending-story-stress “Information is a source of learning. But unless it is organized, processed, and available to the right people in a format for decision making, it is a burden, not a benefit.” - William G. Pollard (1911-1989), American Physicist International Planetary Probe Workshop 10

  6. A couple more anecdotal examples… A few years ago a climate scientist was looking for science data from an older satellite for a comparative study. Turns out the data was never archived. These days, NASA has a requirement to archive science data. Science MSL Engineers looked under every rock for Viking backshell test data. Fortunately, a retired Viking engineer had the data they were looking for in his garage. Engineering International Planetary Probe Workshop 10

  7. NASA is moving towards an equilibrium with new policies concerning technical data New NASA policies Technical Data Limited access: Center records Science Data Is widely available: PDS, DAACs, NSSIDC International Planetary Probe Workshop 10

  8. The most comprehensive source for technical EDL information is … http://edlr.jpl.nasa.gov International Planetary Probe Workshop 10
